Zelma served 18 years as coordinator of spiritual care for New Beacon Hospice, an ecumenical ministry of Baptist Health System and St.Vincent's Hospital (Daughters of Charity) in Birmingham, Alabama. She began her service with Baptist Health System in 1988, and became full-time chaplain for the system's hospice program in 1989. As the program grew, she became coordinator of spiritual care, supervising the work of the 12 hospice chaplains.  New Beacon, originally known as Unity Hospice, was founded in 1997.

Southern Baptist Seminary, LouisvillePrior to moving to Birmingham, Zelma served as supervisor of seminary students enrolled in pastoral care, counseling studies and spiritual formation, and also as supervisor of  ministry experience at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

She was chaplain in clinical training at Louisville's University Hospital and at Central State Hospital in LaGrange, KY. . .

and Director of Chaplaincy at the Masonic Home of Louisville, where she served a community of several hundred residents and staff personnel.

Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TNZelma is an honors graduate and was valedictorian of Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN, where she majored in mathematics and physics.University of Virginia's College at Wise

She was also valedictorian of her graduating classes at  The University of Virginia College at Wise,
and
J. J. Kelley High School.

After serving as a mathematician with Goodyear International Corporation in Akron, OH . . .

. . . she entered  The Southern Baptist Theological Southern Baptist Seminary, LouisvilleSeminary, Louisville, KY, where she earned both the Master of Arts in Christian Education (1966), and the Master of Divinity degree (1985) with a focus on pastoral care.   She completed extensive clinical training in pastoral care in both Louisville and Birmingham, and is a Board Certified Chaplain.

Twenty-one years after she entered the ministry, Zelma's calling was affirmed in 1987 with ordination by Crescent Hill Baptist Church, in a colorful community-wide ceremony at the Masonic Home of Louisville, where she was serving as chaplain to the residents and staff.

Throughout her career, Zelma has been active in a wide variety of mission and ministry projects, including outreach programs for migrant workers in John's Island, SC, and work with residents of isolated Appalachian mining camps.

Baptist Church of the Covenant, BirminghamShe and her husband have been long-time members of Baptist Church of the Covenant, an inner-city congregation near downtown Birmingham, a founding member of both the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the Cooperative Baptist FellowshipAlliance of Baptists.  Zelma has served several terms on the CBF Council on Endorsement, which recommends chaplains and pastoral counselors for official endorsement by the Fellowship. 

Zelma and Pat also were members of  Marble Collegiate Church in New York City, the oldest Protestant organization in North America, founded in 1628.

Zelma's speaking assignments have included churches, preaching conferences, university chapel, convocation, and baccalaureate addresses, retreats and focus weeks Woman's Missionary Unionand student religious organizations.   In her work as a hospice chaplain, she was frequently asked by patients and their families to officiate at funeral and memorial services, and even an occasional wedding ceremony.  Her writing has appeared in both religious and secular publications, including The Christian Century, Louisville Courier-Journal, and other national and regional publications.

Zelma is the 13th of 14 children of the late Elbert and Bertha Mullins in Wise, Virginia. She and Wesley M. "Pat" Pattillo Wesley "Pat" Pattillowere married in 1967 in Louisville, KY.  In 2011 he retired after 10 years on the executive staff of the National Council of Churches, an ecumenical association of 37 U.S. Protestant and Orthodox denominations. He previously served Hong Kong Baptist University in China;  and was vice president of both Samford University in Birmingham, AL; and Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY.   Zelma and Pat have traveled in 45 countries, including Hungary, Egypt,  Denmark, New Zealand, Morocco, Argentina, China, Russia, France, Ireland South Africa and Thailand.Laura Grace Pattillo

Their daughter, Laura Grace Pattillo, is a tenured assistant professor of English and theater at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. She holds the B.A. from the University of Richmond, VA, and the M.A. and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University, where she taught for seven years.  She also taught at the University of South Carolina in Sumter; and at Indiana University Southeast and Bellarmine University, and studied abroad in Italy and England.   

Their son, Stephen Riley Pattillo, operates an international economic Stephen Riley Pattilloand educational consulting firm in Sydney, Australia.  From 1998-2002 he served as resident director of the overseas office of the US-ASEAN Business Council in Singapore, after serving the Business Council in its Washington DC office. He is a graduate of Duke University, Durham, NC, with additional studies at the University of New South Wales. He enjoys golf, scuba diving, and adventure travel.
