Recession White Flight

1. 2007 Ponte de Lima, Vinho Verde, Portugal $5.50 gl $22 btl

The co-op de Ponte de Lima was launched in 1959 and started producing wine by 1962. Originally there were 47 growers and that number has increased to over 2,000 current growers.
The wine is pale yellow with a greenish tinge, very aromatic and youthful with notes of jasmine flowers, lemon and lime citrus zest. It shows a flavorful palate with pineapple, citrus fruit and granny smith apples.
The wine is medium dry, light to medium bodied, with tart acidity and a slight effervescence.

2. 2006 Viñedos de Nieva, Verdejo, Rueda, Spain $7.50 gl $30 btl

Viñedos de Nieva is located in the western-most portion of Rueda in the small town of Nieva.
This wine is pale greenish yellow in color, with powerful aromas of honeydew, green apple, guava and kiwi.
On the palate this wine shows nuances of crushed stone, star fruit, mango, and dried herbs, with a crisp minerality on the finish.

3. 2006 Ecker, Grüner Veltliner, Carnuntrum, Austria $4.50 gl $24 btl (1 liter)

The Ecker family attaches importance to fruity, regional whites and dense, smooth red wine varieties: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Early Red Veltliner, Rivaner, Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, Zweigelt and St. Laurent.
This is a light-bodied, easy drinking wine with crisp acidity and just a hint of white pepper.

1. 2005 Ochoa "Tinto," Bodegas Ochoa, Navarra, Spain $6 gl $24 btl

Documents dating back to 1370 A.D. confirm Ochoa's significance as a wine producer
and detail the sale of Ochoa wine to the Navarra monarchy in that year. Bodegas Ochoa is still family owned and operated with Javier Ochoa at the helm for the past 35 years.
The wine shows medium to deep purple red color with an aromatic nose of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove,
black currant, and huckleberry. A young fruity red with lots of spice and tart black fruit.

2. 2004 Arviza, "Crianza," Bodegas Marqués de Arviza, Rioja Alta, Spain $8 gl $32 btl

Bodegas Marques de Arviza was first established as a bodega back in 1874. The bodega and cellars were built by hand and supported by even older stones and bricks including flagstones from Roman roads.
This wine has a medium ruby garnet color with an aromatic nose of bakers spice, dried cherries, and black plum. The palate shows bright red fruit, dusty leather, and a hint of tobacco. Dry, medium bodied with balanced acidity and soft tannins.

3. 2005 Vinos Pinol Terra Alta Ludovicus , Terra Alta, Spain $5 gl $20 btl

The grapes in this wine are Garnacha (35%), Tempranillo (30%), Syrah (25%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) all perceptible on the nose, which is vibrant, open, and full of ripe black and red fruits, earth, tar, tobacco, and vanilla.
The palate is wide open and forward. It's upfront ripe black berry fruit is immediate on the palate and is followed by spicy vanilla notes before finishing with a mixture of fruit, earth, black pepper, and tobacco. It's all held together with ripe, low to medium tannins and low to medium acidity.
