Reading Research with Confidence Home Study

This home study helps type practitioners maintain professional and ethical standards to keep current with research. Many type users have limited experience and comfort in reading psychological research related to their work. In this gentle, step-by-step study, read Part III, “A Guide to Critical Reading of Research,” from Statistics and Measurement: An Introduction, 4th Edition by Ray Zeisset, then answer study questions that guide you through steps in critiquing the introduction, sample, variables and measures, research design, and the results and discussion sections of illustrative examples from actual and contrived articles. Complete a multiple-choice quiz related to key concepts, and evaluate an actual type-related article.

Learning objectives:

  • To gain comfort in reading a full research article, including the results.

  • To recognize that abstracts alone are insufficient for professional knowledge.
  • To recognize that common sense and an inquiring mind are useful in reading research.

Scoring of essay questions is based on rubrics that evaluate understanding the function of each part of a research article; understanding the function and importance of the research question, hypotheses, sample, independent and dependent variables, and research design; applying understanding of reliability and validity to their relevance to research.

Submit responses to questions within 90 days of receiving the study guide.

Pass: 80% on each of the two parts of the home study:

  • 80% on multiple choice quiz, and
  • 80% on essay questions

Master Practitioner continuing education credits: 15

Interpreting Type to Others Home Study

Use a study guide to pull essential information from the MBTI® manual; Introduction to Type® or Looking at Type™: The Fundamentals; and supplementary handouts, and complete four essay questions/activities. Then demonstrate interpretation skill through one of three activities:

  • prepare a detailed outline and presentation tools you will use to make an introductory presentation on type for a group; or
  • videotape one hour of your presentation from a four-hour workshop in which the MBTI assessment is the primary focus; or
  • videotape your conducting an individual intepretation of about an hour with a client.

Submit for rater evaluation:

  • Essay questions
  • Outline and supporting materials (option 1) or video and supporting materials (option 2 or 3), and
  • A guided self-evaluation of the materials or video.

Learning objectives:

  • To demonstrate skill in interpretation of type to others.
  • To develop practical tools for use when interpreting type to others.
  • To improve type interpretation skills through self-evaluation guided by a set of criteria.

Scoring of essay questions is based on rubrics that evaluate understanding of issues associated with preparation for administration of the MBTI assessment and interpretation of type theory.

Rating of the presentation plan, workshop video, or interpretation video focuses on content of type information more than on presentation skills and is based on criteria used both for guided self-evaluation and for rater evaluation. All criteria are keyed to study materials.

Submit all materials within 90 days of receiving the study guide.

Pass: 80% on each of the two parts of the home study:

  • 80% on essay questions, and
  • 80% on presentation plan (option 1) or group workshop video (option 2) or individual interpretation video (option 3)
