The Practice Hands

 Board 1 Auction Comments
North  South North South New Minor Forcing does not apply to this hand as Opener has a simple raise after Responder's One Spade bid. Responder's hand is much better once he learns of the nine card fit, and should simply raise to game.

North  South North South This problem has a difficult beginning because of North's rebid problem over One Club-One Spade. He has to either rebid Two Clubs or raise Spades with 3. When bidding the hand, I chose to rebid Two Clubs but I thought raising Spades with three card support was fine. Both imperfect answers, but I hated rebidding 1NT and I won't reverse into Two Diamonds. I also refuse to open the bidding One Diamond and rebid Two Clubs. I have yet to be convinced that minor suit canapes are right. Two Diamonds is a variant of NMF I play when Opener rebids his Clubs.

North  South North South Two Diamonds by Responder is New Minor Forcing. The Two Hearts response after Spades are being inquired about shows four Hearts and denies three Spades. Some play that you always bid your four card major first and then 3 card suuport later, but I have found that it makes auctions much simpler if your partner knows directly that you don't have three card support.

North  South North South New Minor Forcing does not apply to this hand as Opener did not rebid 1NT. However, this is a good hand for Fourth Suit Forcing. I prefer that it be forcing to game.

North  South North South Since New Minor Forcing only promises about ten points, it is not forcing to game. However, if Opener is at the top of his range for the 1NT rebid (probably 14 to 15 in support of the major, including distribution), Opener may jump to three of the major to show parter that he is at the top of his range and that they probably have a game.

North  South North South I use 3 Clubs here as a variant of New Minor Forcing, as I use 2 Hearts here to pass or correct to Spades (not a Standard treatment). Four Clubs is a cue bid showing slam encouragement. Four Diamonds shows the Ace of Diamonds. Four Spades is a sign off. 4NT is Roman Keycard Blackwood, South must be looking for heart control and North has it. Five Spades(2 key cards with the Queen of Spades. Five NT shows all key cards and we respond specific kings. Six Diamonds denies the King of Clubs and shows the King of Diamonds. Seven Spades - good luck partner!

North  South North South Although I don't mind rebidding good five card minors when stuck for a rebid, I have to rebid 1NT here due to the garbagy Club suit. The Two Hearts bid shows four Hearts and denies three Spades. Three Hearts shows a good Heart suit and implies concern as to the other suits for No Trump.

North  South North South My partner and I both underbid our hands slightly in this auction (which is a new concept for us). It was a simple 1c-1s-2s-4s. You can't find every 28 point slam, even though this one is pretty frigid.

North  South North South Two Diamonds is new Minor Forcing. Three Spades shows Spades and a maximum, I don't worry about showing Hearts.

North  South North South No new minor forcing here. Three Hearts is a help suit game try, or cue bid in search of slam, or looking for a 4-4 heart fit. Four Hearts is "I have help and I have four hearts." I would have bid Four Spades if I just would have had Heart help without four of them.

North  South North South I am not a big fan of rebidding notrump with a singleton (opening maybe, but thats a different story), but sometimes you have no good rebid and 1NT becomes the best of the lies. Two Clubs is New Minor Forcing. Two hearts denies three Spades and shows Hearts. Two Spades is a signoff after the invitational NMF, 2NT shows extra values and is non-forcing.

North  South North South This was not a new minor forcing auctions for me. South's hand was too flat and had minimum points, so I decided that passing 1nt was just fine. 1d-1s-1nt. We do have a spade fit but getting to game is unlikely.

North  South North South This is the variation of new minor forcing after Opener rebids his minor. Three Clubs is artificial, showing good hand and asking about three spades or four hearts. Three Diamonds denies three card Spade support, denies four Hearts, and shows a distaste for notrump.

North  South North South I felt the South hand is too weak to rebid Two Diamonds (New Minor Forcing). People play that a jump to 3 of the unbid minor is too play (such as a Three Diamonds bid here) but that is with a 6 card suit. Just bid 2 spades and play in your 5-2 or 5-3 spade fit.
