I have a deep, abiding love of trees. A lot of wisdom can be gained by lying under an old tree and simply gazing up at the sky through its branches. The pattern of light and shadow created by leaves is one of the most beautiful and meditative sights in nature. Trees are beings of immense wisdom. Their experience is of a kind that is inhuman, but not alien. It is a perception of the Earth, based in the Earth's cycles as firmly as our own. But it is not of the flesh. Theirs is a perception of rootedness, of the feast of sunlight, of the constant ebb and flow between earth and sky. And yet for all the differences, we share with them the understanding of the Earth, of life and death, and I believe of love and laughter, sorrow and justice. We can communicate with them, we can touch their existence and learn from it. By sharing our similarities and understanding our differences we can become larger than human and closer to the gods. |
