A Nation of Laws

MPS: Yuba City, CA, USA: Ramsey Davis appeared before Yuba City Supreme Court to argue his final appeal to the court to rescind his conviction and the $10.00 fine he received 22 years ago from a lower court. He argued his case on two points.

Point 1: Judicial Prejudice

At his initial hearing Mr. Davis informed the court that he was not aware he was breaking the law. The judge responded to this with a standard rebuttal. "Ignorance of the law is no excuse." Mr. Davis was found guilty and fined $10.00.

"Regarding this issue of ignorance of the law," said Mr. Davis before the Yuba City Supreme Court, "I have done considerable research and discovered there are 34,723,669,043 laws, regulations, rules, and judgments that the court expected me to not ignore. This number includes laws passed by the U.S. Congress, state congresses and assemblies, county boards and supervisors, city assemblies, a myriad of rules and regulations created by various governmental agencies, and numerous judgments by the courts."

"Further study," continued Mr. Davis, "revealed that among sitting judges at all levels of the justice system, none knew all the laws, rules, regulations, and judgments I have cited, and fewer than 10% were knowledgeable of more than just the mundane laws regarding the cases they hear. Instead they rely upon lawyers, clerks, prosecutors, plaintiffs, and defendants, to call laws to their attention."

"To expect an ordinary citizen to know the laws that practitioners of the law do not know after years of study of the law is prima facie prejudicial. Therefore, I ask that the court reverse the guilty verdict on the ground of a biased court."

Point 2: WTF!

"I would also call to the court's attention to the fact that the law upon which my conviction is based was found to be unconstitutional by the Yuba City Supreme Court and repealed by the congress 40 years ago. Therefore, I ask that the court throw out my conviction on the ground of overzealous malfeasance of the court."

"I rest my case."
