The Supreme Taco Supreme Eater
MPS: Yuba City, CA, USA: The board of directors has voted to ban Nabukor Valinski's "Tail of the Thunder Bunny" from the Yuba City Library's public shelves. The controversial children's novel will be available to adults and must be signed out from the library's vault.
"Tail of the Thunder Bunny" is the story of a young carnivorous hare that begins with the hare eating small animals such as mice and squirrels and then, as it grows, to eating cats and dogs. Eventually, the hare becomes large enough to eat horses, cows, and other domestic farm animals. The novel ends when the hare decimates the city zoo. Chief librarian Sandra Holtsein noted, "Thankfully, the only thing that it doesn't eat is people."
The controversy arises because of the graphic descriptions and illustrations of the hare's attacks on other animals, and because the novel's locale is Yuba City. The library's board of directors and others familiar with the novel contend that because of the novel's locale it may horrify the children of Yuba City and permanently damage their psychological development.
The board of director's meeting was open to the public. There were no objections to the board's unanimous action by either of the two attendees.
