MPS: Yuba City, CA, USA: Every 20 years or so, there is a call for amnesty for the illegal aliens that have accumulated in the United States. In 1986 there was much discussion and proposed legislation to grant amnesty for the estimated five million illegal aliens present in the country at that time. In 2006 that estimate has risen to eleven million illegal aliens.
The suggested amnesty calls for forgiving them for breaking the law as their first act upon entering the Untied States, and to offer them a "Pathway to Citizenship" for those in this country for five or more years. This will allow them to move up in the work force to better jobs, attend better schools to educate their children, and give them access to public services now denied them.
Opponents to amnesty prefer that they all be rounded up and shipped back to their countries of origin, and that the borders be secured by any means necessary. One suggested approach is that a 700 mile wall be built along a section of the 1951 mile border. The lesson of the Maginot Line apparently being forgotten.
Surveys of public opinion indicate a strong desire to secure the borders and a willingness to grant amnesty to those illegal aliens present in the United States.
Reader Loren Ipsum writes with an interesting view of an amnesty program.
It should be noted that there are many illegal activities that have occurred in the United States that could also in fairness be subject to amnesty if illegal aliens are granted amnesty. For example:
Robbing banks is illegal. Bank robbers could be given amnesty and be allowed to pursue careers in their field of expertise. Many could be employed in a range of positions in financial institutions, from bank guard to bank president.
Selling drugs is an illegal activity. Drug dealers could be given amnesty and be allowed to pursue careers in their field of expertise. They could be employed in the expanding pharmaceutical industry, mixing and distributing drugs to an accepting clientele.
Rape is definitely illegal. Rapists given amnesty could tour the country visiting colleges and women's organizations advising women on how to avoid inviting unwanted attention.
Child molestation is also an illegal activity. Child molesters granted amnesty could use their knowledge of child psychology in grade schools and childcare centers to better the life experiences of children.
These are but a few examples of many illegal activities that could be subject to amnesty.
