Taxco De Alarcon, is named after a very interesting man. Juan Luis De
Alarcon was the son of a Spanish government official. He spent much of his young life in Taxco in the late 1700's before attending
Law school in Mexico City. He became a Judge then moved back to Spain to further his credentials. While at University
he wrote a number of stories and plays to help pay for his schooling. At least one play, ( Liar Liar} has been translated
to English and is a hilarious comedy. He returned to Mexico becoming a leading Judge but always considered Taxco
his home.
Taxco is located in the State of Guerrero about half way along the "Highway
of the Sun" which connects Mexico City and Acapulco. The cental square is about 6000 feet up in the Sierra Madre,
the altitude and the southern location make for a perfect year round temperature. Taxco became very important to Spain
when it was discovered that it's mountains were full of precious metals, even after 300 years it is still one of the worlds
biggest silver sources. I would guess that more than half of all businesses in Taxco sell silver. If that
isn't enough, every Saturday morning the worlds biggest silver market springs up! No words can explain the scenic
beauty of Taxco and its surrounds, it has to be experienced! Other than the main road through town the streets
are surfaced with hand laid stone. (flat walking shoes are essential). There are no sidewalks or traffic controls and yet
accidents are very rare. Follow the cobble streets and you will experience the full charm of a colonial Mexican
town. Like most of Latin America, beautiful churches are everywhere, the Parish Church of Santa Prisca is a special
example. Restuarants and bars are plentiful and the food is delicious. The climate in the valleys is ideal for farming so
fresh food is brought in to the bustling central market every morning. Taxco is a good place to get exercise, try walking
as much as you can, do remember though, at this altitude the air is a little thinner and so for a day or so you might get
out of breath easily. One other thing is certain you will have a healthy appetite. Crime is rare in Taxco but not
unheard of, don't tempt fate, you don't need a lot of cash as most businesses take credit cards and there are ATM machines.
Many people speak english, but will help you if you try speaking Spanish. The Indian population thrives in Taxco, these
hardworking crafts people set up stall every day in the streets selling esquisite hand made goods of every type, they are
very fair and easy to do business with. With their traditional dress and neatly dressed children they add a cultural
flair wherever they are.
The Accomodation. The self contained two bedroom unit (pictured), is situated in a resort 1000
feet above the town, the front (east) faces a nine hole golf course and within 100 feet there is, swimming, tennis,
a spa and a full 4 star hotel. The smaller bedroom faces the golf course, it has its own outside entrance a closet and bathroom,
a connecting door leads to the Lounge and kitchen. The larger bedroom has beautiful arched windows and a balcony with a pleasant
view, it too has an outside entrance and a connecting door to the lounge and kitchen. The furnishings are pleasant having
everything you need except food and water suppliesincluding a television. The town below is a five minute ride by taxi or
cable car, or -for the more energetic a 20 minute walk. Coming back up takes a bit longer but it is a good climb for
the fit. From the bottom of the hill you are a nice 15 minute walk to the town centre -in Mexican, known as the Zocalo.
Local sites of interest include the mineral spa at, Ixtapan de La Sal (45 minutes), the spectacular
caves "Las Grutas" (20 minutes). Cuernavaca, the summer home of Both Cortez, the Coloniser and Maximillian the Emperor
is perfect for a nice day trip. And if you wish to get back down to sea level, the beaches of Acapulco are
just three hours away.
