The astounding unreported truth--

BLACKS ARE INCARCERATED AT OVER 8 TIMES THE RATE FOR WHITES

According to 1990 census figures (available at http://www.census.gov/) the following figures represent Michigan population:

total population white pop/white % black pop/black %
       9,295,297 7,756,086 83.4% 1,291,706 13.8%

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections 1994 Statistical Report, available at no cost from Michigan Department of Corrections, PO Box 30003, Lansing, MI, 48909, the following figures represent the Michigan prison population:

total population white pop/white % black pop/black %
          40,501 16,438 40.5% 23,561 58.1%

Although blacks make up only 13% of the state population, they make up a whopping 58% of state prison inmates.

The chances that a white person in Michigan was a state prison inmate in 1994 is 16,438 divided by 7,756,086, which equals .0021, or 0.21%.

The chances that a black person in Michigan was a state prison inmate in 1994 is 23,561 divided by 1,291,706, which equals .0182, or 1.82%.

The ratio of the chances of a black person being a state prison inmate, to the chances of a white person being a state prison inmate, is 1.82% divided by 0.21%, which equals 8.66.

This means that if you are a black person in Michigan, your chances of being a prison inmate during any given year are 8 2/3 times higher than the chances of a white person in Michigan being a prison inmate during that same period.
