Hello.  Let me try to answer your question....

A PostPro is a Direct to Disk recording system.  It has anywhere from 4
to 16 tracks. It is relatively identical to a Synclavier except it's
functions are dedicated to a different task.

It can be Stand-Alone (run all by itself) or designed to "slave" to a
Synclavier.   You can also take a Stand-Alone and have it slave by
bypassing the main computer and having a separate Synclavier control it.

There is a PostProSD which is a Stand-Alone 4 to 16 track DtoD WITH a
built-in 32 voice poly-bin.

You see there are all these common elements:

You need a big "package" with humongous power supplies.
Then you need an ABLE computer bin (The Synclavier) which runs the
tower.
On the DtoD, you need a second ABLE.  It is a Synclavier controlling a
DtoD all in one package.  If you want another external Synclavier to
control it (like a 9600) you just remove the SCSI jumper (it is a
communications umbilical cord) on the DtoD and connect the other end to
the 9600.
The voice cards are all the same.  So is the audio input.
On a DtoD, there is no Poly Memory since you are not sampling; just
streaming audio off hard drives.
If you have a PostProSD, you have an extra set of voice cards with Ram
Cards to play back samples.

So its:
package
power supplies
ABLE computer
Sample inputs
Second ABLE if PostPro/DtoD
Voice cards for DtoD
Voice cards + memory for sampling output
Multichannel output to route all your audio
Hard drive to boot from and store sounds
Separate hard drive to play back audio (DtoD)

The keyboard can attach to any "tower".  It is just a big Remote
Control.  If you don't have voice cards with Poly Memory, you can't hear
notes on the keyboard (obviously) but the "tower" will still respond to
all button presses and record your silent performance.

A Stand-Alone DtoD tower starts off at about $4000 for 8 tracks, no keyboard, no
sampling, no Poly Memory.

A Stand-Alone PSMT ("The Synclavier") starts off at about $11,000 with a
Model D ABLE computer, 32 voices, 32 meg of RAM, and a keyboard.

Also check out my "Different Models" page.  Hope this helps you out.
