Heart of the Heart Sutra

Distilled by Petros

A conscientious student or devotee, one who really practices the Perfection of Transcendent-Immanent Wisdom, sees reality (including his "self") in this way: simply as empty of all self-nature.

Such a one does not "try" to see reality in this way, nor "imagine" things to be this way; rather such a one spontaneously sees things in this way. In detail:

The various accumulations of data that make what we call sensory and mental impressions are seen to be totally empty of self-nature;

Form is seen as nothing other than emptiness, even while remaining as it is;

And emptiness is seen as nothing other than form, even while remaining as it is;

Feeling, perception, conceptualization, and consciousness itself all are seen as emptiness, even while remaining just as they are.

All ways, paths, and doctrines are not other than emptiness, even while remaining just as they are.

It is seen that there is neither birth nor rebirth,

Creation nor cessation,

Neither purity nor impurity,

Neither decrease nor increase,

Even while all these apparent manifestations continue to appear as such.

In emptiness there is no form, no feeling, no perception, no formation, no consciousness;

No eye, and no objects seen;

No ear, and no sounds heard;

No senses whatsoever, nor any objects which the senses interact with;

No body nor mind, nor any objects linked to them;

No ignorance, no end of ignorance;

No suffering, no origin of suffering, no cessation of suffering, no path, no wisdom, no attainment, and no non-attainment.

Since there is no obscuration of mind, there is no bar to complete present Enlightenment.

And yet, since complete present Enlightenment is not different from practice,

The wise ones practice with this in mind;

And since complete present Enlightenment is not different from emptiness,

The wise ones practice without any idea of purpose or attainment.

All the Awakeners of all times and all cosmoses, by means of this Transcendent-Immanent Perfection of Wisdom, are awake fully to this complete present Enlightenment.

The great mantra of Perfect Transcendent-Immanent Wisdom which expresses this truth in words, words being not different from emptiness and truth, is as follows:

Aum Gate Gate Paragate Parasamgate Bodhi Svaha

Aum Clear, Clear, Transcended, Transcended and yet Immanent in All that Is: Awakening Is.
