Edward Kelly (1555-1597)

Supplementary Data on Enochian Magic

In 1582, John Dee was 54 years old and had already amassed a significant reputation in various scientific and occult fields. Yet he yearned for more direct wisdom and contact with the spirit-realm. At this time, a man entered into his life who would, in partnership with him, change the course of ceremonial magick and gnostico-spiritist technology for centuries to come. This man was Sir Edward Kelly, still a young man in his late 20s at that time. The two men would soon enter into a lengthy process of visionary work that has come to be known to us as “Enochian Magick.”

This visionary work involved a series of scrying (crystal-gazing) sessions which had the character of mediumistic work, whereby Dee served as interpreter as Kelly entered into a trance state, channeling a large quantity of what were believed to be Angelic communications from higher realms. Despite the “dark” or daemonic reputation that the Enochian work has acquired over the years, Dee and Kelly considered themselves to be operating with only holy and Christian spirits of a very high nature.

Under the guidance of a powerful dictating angel-spirit, AVE, Kelly and Dee received over the course of many months an entire alphabet and vocabulary, as well as a series of sigils or mandala-machines containing a precise and novel method of spiritistic communication involving letters and numbers.

In the late 19th century, MacGregor Mathers, one of the founders of the Order of the Golden Dawn, awoke new interest among the occult subculture in the work of Dee and Kelly by studying their work and adding his own innovations to it, which have resulted in the popularization of the Enochian system to a much wider audience than it would otherwise have received. Enochian purists argue that the innovations of the Golden Dawn to the Enochian system are inauthentic additions to the original system, but many ceremonial magicians have found that the innovations are not contrary to the spirit of the original visions and may be seen as a natural continuation, derived from the same deep psychic sources that spawned the work of Dee and Kelly in the first place.

Although the complete Enochian material produced by Dee and Kelly consists of a large body of work, probably the most-used portion of that work among modern magicians (especially in the Golden Dawn tradition) is that of the Four Watchtowers, originally known as the Great Table. This consists of a single, large square grid of letters, broken down into four “Watchtowers” or elemental squares each consisting of 12 by 13 individual square units. While Dee originally received the Great Table as a single, unbroken unit, Mathers and the G.D. tradition have divided it into four equal-sized units corresponding to the four classical-mystical elements of Air (upper left), Water (upper right), Fire (lower right), and Earth (lower left). These four Watchtowers are further subdivided into 16 sub-units. The number 16 is an important metamathematical figure (2 to the fourth power) which can also be worked into alignment with the I Ching (64) and other important magicko-gnostic systems.

The letters on the Tablets are used to form secret and powerful names of deities and spirits by means of specific combinations, which are taught in the Golden Dawn and other modern magickal systems.

In each Watchtower there are three Secret Holy Names of God which are derived from the horizontal cross bar of the central cross of each Tablet. In total there are twelve Holy Names on the four Tablets.

These Names are invoked during the four Elemental Grade Ceremonies by the Hierophant of the Golden Dawn. Through the power of the Secret Names the general nature of the element involved in the initiation is filtered through the Tablet into the aura of the advancing candidate. The result is the establishment of a magical link and affinity with the element of the Initiation.

The Elemental King is extracted from a clockwise spiral whirl around the Central Cross to be found on each Tablet. There are four elemental Kings in all, one on each tablet. When the Adept invokes the three Secret Holy Names of God, the King is also automatically activated. In addition, the King may be invoked as a specific force. The King is always invoked when lower elemental forces on the Tablet are to be utilized.

There are six Seniors on each of the Four elemental Tablets. This makes a total of 24 Seniors in all. The Seniors follow the King in the Order of Hierarchy. The Seniors are found in the Book of Revelations as the 24 Elders who bow down before the Throne of God. They represent, among other things, time (24 hours). In addition, they possess a certain planetary energy, when the King of a given tablet is equated to the Sun and the six Seniors are thus equatable to the other classical planets.

In all workings where the King is invoked, so are the Seniors, in that they work in collaboration with the elemental King. There are rituals such as the Consecration of an Elemental Tool when the power of the Seniors are called upon. This allows the elemental Weapon to receive in the charging phase the Planetary powers through the elemental nature of the planet. Later when needed by a trained Adept, the tool can then project this force for the purpose of magical and alchemical workings.

There are four Sephirotic (or Calvary) Crosses on each Tablet, each consisting of ten small squares (thus the designation “Sephirotic,” after the 10 Sephira of the Kabbalah). There is one cross in each of the 16 sub-elements. On a colored depiction of the Tablets these crosses are white, which like the Seniors denote a spiritual nature rather than an elemental one.

There are two angels per cross. One calls forth a serviant angel and the other is used to command the angel. These angels are only invoked when the Adept wishes to work with a specific subservient angel.

These angels work under the Angels of the Sephirotic Cross, and help to regulate and balance the forces employed. They may be utilized for pyramid working and other important elemental considerations. They are formed from the first letter in each file above the Calvary Cross and are permutated to provide (4) in total per sub-section.

The Elemental Tablets are introduced one at a time in the Grade Initiations of the Golden Dawn. There is an important Initiation that is not depicted on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. It is the Portal Initiation. It is attributed to the top point of the pentagram which is Spirit. Thus, in the Portal Initiation of our Order, the Tablet of Union is introduced as it represents the building Spirit or actuating glue between the elements. The highest name of Spirit in this Tablet is EHNB. This is the purest Spiritual force and is only invoked when some empowering is required from the direct force of spirit. The Tablet of Union is placed on the center Altar to act as the central hub from which the Elemental Tablets are spokes.

This only reveals a miniscule amount of information on Enochian Golden Dawn methodology. Enochian Magic requires a solid and firm foundation in the study of the Qabalah, Geomancy, Tarot, Alchemy, and Astrology. It can be a potent and effective system of esoteric engineering when utilized with knowledge and understanding.
