Use a small dictionary

Buy a small bilingual dictionary (English to some other language), the size that a tourist could stuff into a pocket. Use this as your general word list. If the word you want to use is not in the dictionary, define the word or choose a better one. If the expression you intend to use in not in the dictionary, do not use it. Find a different way to express your idea or purpose.

If you use a standard English language dictionary , select words based on their most common meaning or usage.

Be REDUNDANT when necessary

Sometimes it is prudent to say the same thing several different ways!
