The classic event is scheduled for Saturday, February 24, at its traditional site, the Los Angeles Sports Arena. High school events get under way at 10:30 a.m., with Invitational event at 5:00 p.m.
Granville is one of the most celebrated high school athletes in California and around the country in recent years. He emerged as an age group sensation four years ago and has fulfilled every promise.
Last year, though only a junior, Granville ran the 800 meters in 1:47.96, the fastest time in the nation by a high school runner. The time is the fastest ever in California by a junior. Granville also holds the state records for sophomores (1:48.98 in 1994) and freshmen (1:51.03 in 1993). These are just a few of the state and national records Granville holds in various classes and age groups.
Granville also clocked a personal best 46.15 in the 400 meters in 1995, fourth fastest in the country and second fastest by an undergrad. Only rival and friend Obea Muir of Pasadena Muir ran faster among returning quarter milers.
At the end of the season Granville finished 5th in Track & Field News' voting for the best overall prep track athlete in the country.
At the L.A. Invitational Granville will compete in the 500 yards. He won the event two years ago, in his sophomore year. His time, 57.7, still stands as the meet's record.
