L.A. Invitational Indoor Track Meet/Angela Williams

Angela Williams

Angela Williams of Chino is already ranked the top sprinter in the nation although she's only a sophomore. Some say she will be a better prep runner than Marion Jones and could be the next Wilma Rudolph or Flo-Jo.

SPRINTING PHENOM WILLIAMS IN THE L.A. INVITATIONAL OPEN 500

Sprinting sensation Angela Williams of Chino, dubbed by track connoisseurs as the second coming of Marion Jones, is one of the leading entrants in the Opoen 500 Yards at the 37th annual Los Angeles Invitational indoor track meet, Saturday, February 24, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Last year, though only a frosh, Williams was ranked the top 100-meter runner in the country. She recorded the fastest time in the nation, 11.24, with the closest follower (LaKeisha Backus of Long Beach Wilson) at 11.47. Williams improved the national frosh record by a whopping .34 of a second! Her time qualifies Angela for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Williams confirmed her mark-the 4th fastest ever by a high school runner-with victories at the USA Track and Field Junior Championships, the Golden West Invitational and the U.S. Junior Olympics meet.

In an unusual double, Williams also was ranked second in the country (and tops among undergrads) in the 400 meters. She won the state title in the one-lapper, and defeated national junior champion Carla Estes of Union City Logan. Williams' 1995 time in the 400 was a very promising 53.40, one of the fastest ever in the U.S. by a frosh.

William's performances were so impressive that she finished second in the voting for the overall High School Female Athlete of the Year award by Track & Field News.

Williams excels on the track, but also in the classroom. She's a honor student "sporting" a 4.4 GPA!
