BRIANNA'S STORY - LIVING WITH ADHD

Brianna is my granddaughter, and the story is about her, how we discovered the ADHD, the treatment and how she is doing today.

With information for all parents, I hope it will help someone if their child is experiencing the same behavior Brianna showed, so they can get help.

ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, affects 3 to 5 percent of all children, or approx. 2 million.  In an average classroom of 25 to 30 students, there will be at least one child with ADHD.

An incurable disease affecting the connecting nerves of the front lobes, a child with ADHD has difficulty in controlling their emotions, or displaying them.  It does not affect their intelligence.

Brianna is a very intelligent child.  Making A's and B's, she has to put forth an extra effort, but maintains her grades.  She loves to read and is reading above her grade level of the 4th grade by two to three grades.

She is under treatment with medication and therapy, and is doing well today.

Sometimes we think our children are just misbehaving, or deliberately causing a commotion in the family, but perhaps there is an underlying problem.  Not all children with this behavior have ADHD, but those who do, need to have treatment so they can function as normal children.

Thinking at first that Brianna was spoiled or wanted more attention, it wasn't until she began the uncontrollable "temper tantrums", as we called them, that we suspected there was something else.

It was almost a relief when we found out that she had ADHD.  That may sound harsh, but when a parent or grandparent sees a child in such a behavior and nothing is working, and it is getting worse, at least we knew the reason.

And, now we realize how much torment she was in.  When she would have an episode, it wasn't because she wanted it, but because for some emotion that she was unable to convey to us, it caused the behavior.  Once the episodes start, the child has no way of controlling it.  But with medication and therapy, she is now able to do so, and we no longer see uncontrolled behavior.

If you would like more information, type in ADHD and bring up the site National Institute Mental Health, or NIMH.  There is some very good information.  Also, if you think your child might have ADHD or any of the other diseases associated with ADHD, contact your family doctor for an evaluation.

This will be included in the Collection of Short Stories.

EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION

This story came to me one evening when my husband and I wanted to watch some television and be entertained.  What we found wasn't worth watching, and I got angry and upset.  I began to write; to put down my feelings, and soon I had written an essay on the society of today, our morals, and where we have been and what our future has in store for us.

Are we evolving naturally into a freer society with low morals, a free for all for everyone and anyone.  A society where vulgar language is the norm, disrespect for elders, our neighbors, and even family is becoming more prevalent.  Is it because we want to do this, or are we being forced into a society by those who have the power to suggest, or even "teach" our youth that the old way of life is all wrong, and that we need a revolution to start a new way of life.  One with no morals, no respect for other people or their property, one which highlights free sex, vulgar language, promotion of violence and to think that everything is owed to them.

It is an essay to make us all think of how we are living today.  If this is what we want, then I say we are evolving, however, I really think it is more of a revolution, forcing us into a way of life far different than what most of us have been brought up to believe in.

EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION will be included in the Collection.

THE SODDY

THE SODDY is a fictional tale of a family who moves west, settling in Nebraska and working for the free land.  The only material available to build homes were the grasses and sod.  As the family builds their sod home, they find out that it keeps them warm during the winter and cool during the summer.
A story to warm the heart and appreciate the settlers who came before us.

DIABLO AND THE RODEO MAN

Another fiction story about a retired rodeo bronc rider who's injuries caused him to leave the rodeo and the hopes of building his own ranch for rodeo stock.  When he discovers the black stallion, called "the black devil" and the one who injured him, he buys him.  Can he tame the stallion.  When George falls in the field and no one is near by to help him, he sees the stallion only a few feet away in his enclosure, but if he gets out, what will he do.  George can only hope and pray.

This story is about companionship, the love of animals and the bond humans can make.

Reviewed by Joshua Berry, aka Charles Moore, Idaho

Barbara Foster has written a great short story of companionship.  It begins as a friendship between a middle-aged man and a young man.  The friendship turns into respect and each man seems to learn from the other.  Shortly we are introduced to Diablo, a mean spirited rodeo horse who was too wild to be on the circuit.
The two men,George and Jason, see the stallion is for sale, but George has had a previous encounter with Diable and is skeptical.  Thinking there must be something, they purchase Diablo and use him for stud.
As you read through this story you see a transformation.  The once mean spirited Diablo, when faced with a crisis, becomes a gentle and caring horse.  The very cowboy he'd knocked out of the rodeo would need his help and it would be up to Diablo to do something.
Please read this story of the ultimate companionship between a horse and a cowboy.
Barbara Foster, this is five stars.

MOKE AND MR. SQUIRREL

When Moke had to leave the farm and the freedom to roam, he had to learn to live in the large fenced yard.  There he meets the squirrels and one in particular.  Both were curious about each other and finally reach an agreement to be friends and to play their special game.

THE ELVES HOLIDAY

The elves organize for their own holiday, but they still have to help Santa with the toys.  When the big sleigh comes to get the toys they've made, they are almost discovered, but their magic works and the toys are on their way to the North Pole for Santa to deliver.  A delightful story for Christmas or anytime.
