LIHUE – History was made, and then eaten,
Sunday at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair when the Rotary Club of
Poipu Beach created what members claimed was the world’s longest
Spam musubi on the football field at Vidinha Stadium.
There is no way to verify the claim that the
100-yard long creation was really a new world’s record, because as
soon as it was made, it was eaten.

Accompanied by the exuberant announcing of Chad
Dellatan, the club and its adroit assembly line of eight teams
constructed a Spam musubi snake made up of 300 regular-sized musubi,
laid end to end.
The task was accomplished in 59 minutes. Rotary
club officials said the previous world record was a mere 130 bricks
long.
When the cellophane-wrapped snake of musubi was
completed, Dellatan declared, “We came, we saw, we musubiiiiiiied!”
The innovative project was a fund-raiser for
the Diabetes Association of Kauai, said Jim Case, president of the
Rotary Club of Poipu Beach.
Case estimated that the 49-member club had sold
nearly 800 tickets to the event, each of which could be redeemed for
4-inch bricks of the local staple. Musubi munchers were also
eligible for one of about 35 door prizes and also the grand prize
drawing for a trip for two to Las Vegas.
Musubi is technically defined as rice and Spam
rolled into nori, Case said, noting that there are many different
recipes used. Some people add egg, others add ginger or wasabi.
“We’re using an oriental barbecue sauce today,” he said.
When the club held a practice assembly session
several weeks ago to build a 10-foot model, members learned that
they had a few bugs to work out.
Initially the nori wouldn’t stick to the rest
of the musubi, Case said, so they reversed the order in which the
ingredients were layered and all was fine.
Koa Trading donated 100 cans of Spam to the
effort and Gaylord’s Restaurant sliced and fried all of it. Other
participating restaurants were Poipu Beach Broiler, Joe’s on the
Green, Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, Grinds Café & Espresso and
Coconuts.
Assembly work was done by past beneficiaries of
club donations, including Kauai Food Bank, Malama Pono and St.
Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church.
The Rotary Club of Poipu Beach is one of six
Rotary clubs on Kauai. The service organization includes 1.2 million
members worldwide, all of whom subscribe to the motto, ”Service
Above Self.” |
