The Magic of Watsu

Water therapy promotes deep relaxation, healing

Floating in warm salt water, lightly supported in another’s arms while feeling your limbs being gently moved and stretched as though you’re in a flowing dream, the soothing therapy of Watsu is the ultimate in deep release and total relaxation.

Therein lies the magic of Watsu, according to practitioner Francesco Garripoli, who offers Watsu sessions in his custom-designed salt-water pool at Kahuna Valley, his property which sits at the base of the Makaleha mountain range in Kapahi.

“ When we are put into a floating position and realize we are protected and safe, our body is somehow comforted so that the mind can release in a lot different way,” he said. “As the body relaxes, the whole mental-spiritual component of a person seems to drop into a relaxed state as well.”

A water-based massage, Watsu feels more gentle and soothing than traditional body work because a body suspended in water feels weightless and is free of the rigidity that comes with cool temperatures and lying on a table, Garripoli said. The warmth of the water helps open muscles and joints ever so gently, allowing energy to flow more easily.

“As a therapy Watsu is designed really to get a person into a receptive healing state which happens when you’re in warm water,” he said. “The great thing about Watsu is what happens to a body beyond all the stretching is that you go into a relaxed state that science is showing is where we heal. Our memory works the best as does our immune system when we are in a relaxed state.”

Garripoli said Watsu customers report breakthroughs in physical and emotional blockages, release of long-held physical tension and pain, profound insights and awakenings, all natural results of the body’s deeply relaxed state.

“ As changes happen in the body, something shifts in the mind as well, allowing people to see their lives in much clearer ways,” he said, explaining that true healing of any kind must occur on a core level. “The people who really heal are those who really let go of patterns and the holdings in their mind.”

For water-lover Garripoli who had long known the value of blending Eastern and Western philosophies, the combination of Zen, Shiatsu massage and salt water was a perfect match for him and his talents, and one he is more than happy to share. “To me it’s like if they ever invented a modality for my interests and what I see about how I can help people, they couldn’t have invented a more perfect one.”
