Clearing the Way

Space clearing brings health and prosperity to homes and businesses

Sometimes the answer to our problems is right under our noses – or within our homes and offices, as SuEllyn Hampton has often found during her years as a space clearing and feng shui consultant. Hampton, owner of Freedom's Gate Feng Shui, said that feng shui is sometimes thought of as simply rearranging furniture but it's much more than that. Coupled with space clearing, it can improve health, wealth and open the door to unexpected transformations.

"Space clearing is based on the idea that your physical surroundings greatly influence how you feel, how you live your life and what you attract into your life," Hampton said. "The whole purpose of space clearing is to bring harmony to the space and to everyone in the space."

It's often easier to illustrate the effects of space clearing than to explain them. Take, for example, Hampton's experience with a friend who had hanging on a wall in her home a painting of man stooped low to the ground, carrying on his back a large, heavy bundle of something. Her friend said she loved the picture which she had brought home from a trip to Mexico, but Hampton immediately felt the oppression it was bringing.

"I asked her, 'Do you feel like you have a burden like that on your back?' " Her friend, surprised, thought for a moment, sighed, then said "Yes, I do."Initially reluctant to remove the picture, the friend eventually took it down and within several days phoned Hampton to report that she was amazed at the difference in how she felt.

POWER OF IMAGERY

It's more than just semantics, Hampton said. "Imagery is so powerful to us. It's like the Law of Attraction. We attract to us what we think about, what we see and imagine in our minds. That's why what we have around us in our home and office are so important."

Another friend of Hampton's had painted a scene from the legend of Pan, in which Pan, mistaking his beloved for a deer while hunting in the forest, shoots her with an arrow through her back, piercing her lungs. In the painting, Pan holds his lover as she is dying, blood trickling out of her mouth.

Within days of hanging the painting in her bedroom, Hampton's friend became ill with pneumonia. After Hampton's walk-through of the house during which she discussed the effect the violent painting was creating, the friend immediately moved the painting to a storage shed.

"We work really hard to heal ourselves. We go to doctors, get healing treatments and try to eat right," Hampton said. "Then we go home and never consider that our home is influencing us."

Certainly space clearing results can do more than remove burdens. They can literally and figuratively open doors to new, unexpected delights as evidenced by Holly Schunk's experience when Hampton cleared Keiki Kottage, Schunk's children's consignment store in Kapaa.

Schunk had long used a room in the middle of the store as a storage facility for items that had been dropped off to the store and for those waiting to be picked up. "An organized mess," Schunk said. "It worked really well for me." What Hampton saw was clutter in the health region of the store as per feng shui tradition and recommended that Schunk clear it out and open it up.

The energy began to shift almost immediately, Schunk said. Working alone on a Sunday when the store was closed, she realized she needed a "big strong guy" to help her move things. Suddenly there was a knock on her door. Her neighbor appeared saying, "Hi, do you need a big strong guy to help you out?" "My mouth just fell open," she said. He stayed for three hours, helping her move boxes, take down shelving and deliver things to the Salvation Army for donation. "We emptied the room out and I had a nice, clean palette to work with," she said.

What she created with the space is now Comforts of Home, a "shabby chic" boutique in the center of Keiki Kottage which immediately became popular with customers and was recently featured on the front page of The Garden Island newspaper's Lifestyle section." This is what I was born to do. This is what I love," Schunk said. The clearing "opened more of my creativity center."

CLEARING PROPERTY

Zoreh Afsar had been trying to sell her mountaintop 10 acres of land for years, but no matter how many realtors she worked with, it remained on the market. After meeting Hampton, she decided to have the land cleared.

Shortly after the clearing, Afsar received an offer on the acreage for more than her asking price. After more than 2 1/2 years, the property finally sold." The entire experience was one of the most awesome spiritual connections with all of us in the circle while she was doing the clearing, but also with ourselves. Oneness, personally and financially," Afsar said. "It is mysterious about the unseen. It is beyond me a bit, but it works.

"SuEllyn comes from the purity with a very strong sense of unity with everyone," Afsar said. "She honors every tradition. Her work is pure. I have a lot of honor for what she does and how she helps us individually to see stuff that is not very clear."
Maria Maitino had been trying to sell her Kalihiwai Ridge home for more than a year, having received several offers, only to see each deal quickly fall through. "We were perplexed. It's a gorgeous house," she said.

Ten days after Hampton's clearing, Maitino received another offer, one that went through. "I'm kind of skeptical but I thought, 'OK, you cannot argue with this.' After 14 months on the market and 10 days after SuEllyn shows up, the house has a buyer. Now some people would call that coincidence. I call it magic."

DISCONTENTED SPIRITS

What exactly is being "cleared" in these processes varies from property to property: stuck energy, angry or disgruntled spirits – things that sometimes cannot be easily felt and things that sometimes can.

While in Taos, N.M., Hampton lived for three years in a 200 year old house that was also occupied by an angry American Indian spirit. Priests had tried to exorcise him over the years to no avail, Hampton said. Though she could distinctly feel the Indian's presence, her roommate did not and didn't believe her.

One day a friend visited, was able to see the spirit and commented about him, Hampton said, making the spirit angry. "My dog came in, saw him (the spirit), yelped and freaked out and wouldn't come back in the house for a long time. That's when my roommate said, 'I don't believe you but I believe the dog.' "
Though she eventually moved out of that house, the experience left Hampton with a deep desire to be able to "clear" such spirits from properties, and began studying the art.

A woman of many talents, Hampton also performs personal emotional clearings, studied Ayurveda during the last year and practices ortho-bionomy, which is the gentle movement of the body into preferred positions so that the body can heal itself using its own wisdom. "Ortho-bionomy is about being held the way you always wanted to be held," she said. "You're safe and your body is being shown how it's out of balance, and the brain takes it and shifts. It's kind of amazing work."
Hampton's move to Kauai nearly three years ago to be near her daughter and her daughter's family was the culmination of a long-held dream. "I'd always wanted to live on one of these islands ever since I read Hawaii by James Michener in high school."

Clearing the way to live your dreams - that in a nutshell is what Hampton's life and business is all about.
" Our mind is so, so powerful that the images that we see and the feelings that we feel create our world."

Easy Fixes for Home and Office

Clutter is the biggest energy block in homes and offices, says SuEllyn Hampton, space clearing and feng shui consultant and owner of Freedom's Gate Feng Shui. Here are some situations she often sees and how and why to remedy them.

Cluttered Desk

A cluttered desk is actually a sign of overwhelm or overburden, despite the humorous sign stating "A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind," said Hampton. It's more than simple organization. "A clean desk is a sign of someone who is calm, present and grounded and able to do his or her work with clarity and ease." When confronted with clutter upon entering a home or office, you feel overwhelmed right away, she said. "Some people live in that state all the time. If you can't clear it yourself, get help so that you can emerge."

Garage or Front Entry Clutter

People often amass the debris of projects they intend to get around to one of these days, keeping them out in plain sight, ostensibly so they don't forget about them. But what really happens, Hampton said, is that the weight of the unfinished work hits them in the face when they see it, draining their energy, literally and figuratively. "Choose what you most want to do, maybe keep that out, reorganize or get rid of the rest and put it away so that you don't see it all of the time."

Entry Barriers

Have you ever walked into a store and been confronted with a counter or some other barrier blocking your immediate access to the rest of the space? While it may seem practical or like a clever design element, blocks right inside an entry "just stop you," Hampton said - the last thing that an open-to-the-public business needs.

Mystery Boxes of Stuff

Those boxes of "stuff" that you move with you from home to home, the ones you haven't even looked in for years? They are keeping you unhealthily bound to your past, Hampton said, preventing you from being fully present in the moment. If it's difficult to sort and clear them out by yourself, call upon a trusted friend or professional. You will feel the difference.
