Kay Toliver was a teaching sensation. She taught math to underprivileged students in East Harlem. Though I hadn't hear
of her before this assignment, I researched her achievements and interviewed her in the classroom. The assignment was to
write the copy for a post card aimed at teachers: 5" X 8" glossy stock, B&W bleed photo of Kay in action on
front, copy on reverse. This is the copy I submitted.
Teachers are the Country's most valuable asset. If you've seen "The Eddie Files" on PBS (KAY TOLIVER is the host
teacher) or "Good Morning Ms. Toliver", then you know the kind of effect teachers have on their students. Their
lives, in a real way, are shaped in your classroom.
How has KAY TOLIVER been so successful as a Math teacher in one of the most underprivileged school districts in the country?
KAY TOLIVER loves to teach! She teaches every day! Her abilities as a teacher have earned her: The Presidential Award Secondary
Math, Disney American Teacher Awards. Reliance Award, Kilby Award, Essence Award, Outstanding Educator of the Year Award (National
Science Foundation). She has the respect and admiration of her students, fellow teachers and administrators. Of course,
she's the teachers' teacher. She models workable concepts. KAY's the most sought after teacher in the country - she's given
over 500 workshops and keynote presentations to school districts and educational organizations.
KAY is excited about teaching! She excites teachers! "One afternoon with you, and everyone in the room was suddenly
transported back ... when enthusiasm was boundless and a love of teaching endless..." KAY affects the lives, and future,
of her students, their parents, her community. Weren't those your goals when you decided to be an educator? It is important
that we address the needs of teachers as life-long learners.
