'Pirates' Loots Box Office, Grosses $258M
"Pirates of the Caribbean" is looking more like "Treasure Island." Already a record-shattering blockbuster, ohnny Depp's sequel "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" dug up $62.2 million in its second weekend, raising its 10-day total to $258.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie has quickly become the year's top-grossing film, rocketing past "X-Men: The Last Stand," which has taken in $232 million in eight weeks. The "Pirates" sequel has grossed an additional $125 million overseas. "It's really fun when you're riding a comet like this," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, which based the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies on its theme park attraction. "This thing is just unbelievable. It creates its own wake." "Dead Man's Chest" had the third-best second weekend ever, behind "Shrek 2" ($72.2 million) and "Spider-Man" ($71.4 million). By next weekend, "Dead Man's Chest" should climb past the $305 million domestic total rung up by its predecessor, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," Disney's Viane said. "Dead Man's Chest" debuted with $135.6 million over the opening weekend, beating the previous record of $114.8 million set by "Spider-Man" in 2002. Ending with a cliffhanger, "Dead Man's Chest" will be closely followed by a third "Pirates" movie due out next May, with Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightly and other co-stars on a voyage to rescue Depp's rakish pirate Capt. Jack Sparrow. "Huge expectations. 'Pirates 2' is maybe the toughest act in box-office history to follow," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. "'Pirates 3' is the definition of a predestined blockbuster."

'Pirates' Sets 1-Day Box Office Record
Move over Darth Vader. Captain Jack Sparrow is king for a day. Preliminary estimates released by Disney show that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" earned $55.5 million on Friday, which would set the record for the largest one-day take at the box office. The previous record was set last year by "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith," which grossed about $50 million. The movie was shown on 4,133 screens, beginning at midnight Friday. Only 2004's "Shrek 2" and "Spider-Man 2" debuted on more screens. Disney also received reports of continuous sellouts and requests to add more screens at multiplexes. "We're obviously thrilled beyond belief. Anytime you break an industry record ... the word ecstatic comes to mind," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution at Disney.
Depp's 'Pirates' Scores Record $132M Debut
Johnny Depp's boozy, woozy buccaneer Jack Sparrow has plundered the box office, with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" taking in a record $135 million (actual) in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday. Disney's swashbuckling sequel sailed past the previous all-time best debut, 2002's "Spider-Man," which took in $114.8 million in its first weekend. "Dead Man's Chest" also did nearly three times the business of its predecessor, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," which took in $46.6 million over opening weekend in 2003. The sequel surpassed that total in its first day alone, taking in $55.5 million Friday to beat the previous single-day record of $50 million, set last year by "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith." "When people in the industry predicted these high numbers, I thought they were just trying to be mean. So no matter how good we did, if we did $100 million, we'd be failures," Bruckheimer told The Associated Press on Sunday. "I didn't think we'd get near these numbers." "Maybe the only movie that has a chance to beat this record might be the next `Pirates' movie," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. Audiences won't have to wait long. Disney shot much of the third installment at the same time as "Dead Man's Chest," which ends in a cliffhanger leading into part three, due in theaters over Memorial Day weekend next year.

Johnny Depp was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actor ("Neverland"), but didn't win. But he looked cute in his blue suit and matching glasses.
June 11, 2004
The MTV Movie Awards for 2004 were on TV last night. Johnny Depp won "Best Actor" award. He accepted the award on a boat in France. He pretended to be sleeping, and had on a white shirt, ragged blue jeans, chains around his neck, and sunglasses. Beside him on the deck was a plastic curved pirate sword, and behind him on the rail were a pirate hat and another sword (the kind you'd buy for a kid). Someone walked up, "woke him up", and handed him something wrapped in plain paper. He said thank you, that person left, and he tore the paper and saw the MTV award inside. He thanked the people who worked on POTC and the people who saw it. He was very gracious, and said he was doing research for POTC 2 "as you can see", he said, and waved one of the plastic swords around. I hope in the next movie Jerry Bruckheimer will make sure he has a better sword!

I was watching the Kentucky Derby today and heard what I call "Jack Sparrow's Theme" being used as background music! It was nice to hear it used that way!

Johnny Depp's new movie, "Secret Window", opened second at the Box Office this past weekend. It was the highest this week for a new movie. I went to see it, and thought it was interesting and worth the ticket price. The story was a little weak, but I enjoyed Johnny Depp's performance. It was interesting to see him having a "bad hair day"! I just hope it doesn't revive the "grunge" look!

There's a good article in last week's TIME magazine about Johnny Depp. It has a new photo of him with many tatoos revealed. Look for it on newstands today!

Well, I know we all know by now that Johnny Depp didn't win the "Best Actor" Academy Award. But he sure did look good that night! He said it was a "pretty good way to spend an afternoon."

The Oscars are in two days, so I've been coming across articles about Johnny Depp. Here's one sent to me by Fern Tree in England. It's from "Sky, the Magazine", March 2004 issue.

Johnny Depp won a Screen Actors Guild Award tonight for Best Actor in a Motion Picture! Wow! Congratulations to our favorite pirate!
February 15, 2004
The British Academy Awards were today. "Johnny Depp arrived minutes before the ceremony and was given the biggest scream of the evening by the hundreds of fans lining the Leicester Square red carpet. Bafta organizers had earlier warned that the POTC star might not turn up, despite being nominated for best actor for his Captain Jack Sparrow role in the movie. Depp, who arrived wearing brown glasses, said, "I'm not a big fan of competition, but it's nice to be nominated. It's always good to be recognized for one's work." (from: www.ananova.com)

Last night during the Super Bowl (U.S.) there was a commercial for Johnny Depp's new movie, "Secret Window". Considering those commercials are the most expensive on TV, it says that Johnny's hit the big league publicity-wise. There was also a link to the trailer on "Yahoo!" today. Check it out here.

"The Pirate Hunter" is a book I've been reading. It's the true story about Captain William Kidd, the man accused of piracy around 1700. I've found it fascinating and a window into that time period as well as pirates, which is one of my favorite subjects lately (gee, I wonder why?). I highly recommend it to anyone seriously looking for accurate information about life on the high seas in the late 1600s.
It's a real page-turner, too!

Johnny Depp has been nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award! He was the first one mentioned during the announcement in that category. Congratulations and good luck!
"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" earned nominations for Achievement in Makeup, Achievement in Sound, Achievement in Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects. Congratulations!
Go to the "Yahoo! Movies" site and vote for Johnny Depp as your pick for Best Actor of 2003 (Weekly Poll). He's ahead so far!

Johnny Depp did not win a Golden Globe Award tonight, but he was very handsome and charming in the audience. In the states, we had to choose between watching the Golden Globes and watching "Blow" on another channel. Guess someone in Hollywood recognizes Johnny's draw. Fans of POTC are sorry he didn't win, but he's a winner to us!

Here's an article from "E! Online" with the latest news on Johnny Depp's career:
It used to be a little Depp'd do ya. But these days in Hollywood a lot of Depp is preferable. Hoping to capitalize on the tremendous buzz Johnny Depp's received since the blockbuster success of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Sony Pictures Entertainment is rushing the release of the actor's latest flick, a thriller called Secret Window, to March 12 from its original April 23 launch. Studio execs are hoping the six-week advance in scheduling will improve Window chances at the box office, especially if Depp wins either a Golden Globe or a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor. He also has an outside chance at an Oscar nomination next Tuesday, which would raise his profile even higher. Depp's turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's Pirates has proven a huge hit with moviegoers, as well as critics. Since sailing into theaters last July, the Disney swashbuckler has grossed more than $305 million in domestic ticket sales and tallied more than $652 million worldwide, not to mention selling boatloads of DVDs. Depp also stole the show in Sony's Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which grossed a solid $56 million domestically last year. Sony hopes for even bigger success with Secret Window. Based on a Stephen King novella, the film stars Depp as a depressed writer suffering through a painful divorce and being stalked by a psychotic stranger (John Turturro). "Johnny Depp is just terrific in this film," says Jeff Blake, who, as Sony's president of worldwide marketing and distribution, is pulling for another deft Depp perfomance at the box office. "Whenever you have a thriller that plays as well as Secret Window, you listen to your audience and you get your film out there." Blake says that Sony's Columbia Pictures division will begin rolling out its promotional campaign for the flick with a TV ad on February 1, aka Super Bowl Sunday. The move will also give Window a jump on two other thrillers, Warners' serial-killer drama Taking Lives with Angelina Jolie and Universal's remake of Dawn of the Dead, both of which will be released a week later on March 19. Secret Window was adapted and directed by David Koepp, the A-list scribe behind Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible and Spider-Man, whose most recently helming job was 1999's Stir of Echoes. Window also costars Maria Bello (who like Depp, is up for a Golden Globe and SAG honors for her performance in The Cooler), Timothy Hutton and Charles S. Dutton. Besides Window, Depp has a few other would-be blockbusters on the horizon. Not only has he agreed to come aboard a Pirates sequel, but he's also Tim Burton's top choice to play candy man Willy Wonka in a update of Roald Dahl's classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory due out in 2005. The actor will also be keeping his art-house cred with a couple of upcoming projects. He will reunite with his Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas partner Benicio Del Toro for The Rum Diary, an adaptation of an earlier Hunter S. Thompson novel that Del Toro plans to direct. Depp will also portray the 18th century poet John Wimot, aka the Earl of Rochester, whose famed life of debauchery is the basis for the biopic The Libertine.

Fern Tree, the great artist who has complimented my site with wonderful drawings, has brought another very talented artist to my attention. This young man can draw like nobody's business. He has two Jack Sparrow drawings that will knock your socks off. Movie-poster style, brilliant colors, great composition. Check out his artwork at "deviantart". It's well worth the trip!

Unfortunately, Johnny Depp did not win a People's Choice Award. He didn't attend, either, so it was a disappointing night. He also didn't win the Online Film Critics Society Award or the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor. However, POTC did win the BFCA award for Best Family Film (Live Action). So there's some recognition for our favorite pasttime!
In other bad news, POTC is now off the Box Office Chart. I'm only assuming it's showing in so few theaters that it didn't make the list, or it isn't showing in any theaters. Sigh. Well, we know the day had to come!
In fun news, VH1 has Johnny Depp at the number 5 spot on their "Hottest Hotties" List. They mostly showed his performance in "Edward Scissorhands" (maybe they couldn't get clips from POTC?), and said he was sexy no matter what role he played. "You can't hide cool" one of the commentators said.

Johnny Depp has been nominated for "Favorite Motion Picture Actor" from the People's Choice Awards, which will air on CBS, January 11 (9-11:00 p.m.). I haven't heard if Johnny will be there, but you might want to watch anyway, to see if he wins!
An article I found on the "Yahoo!" movie news site, says this about Johnny's newest film venture:
(By Spencer Garvey, FilmStew.com) Now that he has conquered the seven seas, Golden Globe nominee Johnny Depp will be headed back to the 17th century. Depp has signed on to star with John Malkovich and Samantha Morton in The Libertine, which will mark the feature directing debut of British helmer Laurence Dunmore. Production on the project is slated to begin February 23rd in London. Stephen Jeffreys adapted the script based on his own play. Libertine will star Depp as John Wilmont, the Earl of Rochester and a poet who knew how to use his words for flattery, yet was a very free and liberal thinker when in came to matters of religion. A long-time confidant of King Charles II (Malkovich), Wilmont's demise and eventual death at the age of 33 came after he fell deeply in love with struggling actress Elizabeth Barry (Morton). Malkovich is producing the project through his Mr. Mudd production banner. Mudd's Russell Smith and Lianne Halfon will also produce, with Chase Bailey, Ralph Kamp and Louise Goodsill executive producing. Robert Jones and the U.K. Film Council are providing financing on the $16 million project, and Odyssey Entertainment will be handling foreign sales on the film. Depp is currently nominated for a Golden Globe for playing Capt. Jack Sparrow in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Following The Libertine, Depp will turn to Warner Bros.' remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for director Tim Burton. He is then likely to return to the screen as Sparrow in the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Box Office Receipts from the Jan. 2-4 Weekend popped POTC up one place to 60th. It's in 27 theaters and has gross receipts of $305,411,224. "Return of the King" is poised to pass it on the All-Time Box Office rankings. But that's okay, I've loved the LOTR series, as I'm sure you did, too.
Here's an article from "Entertainment Tonight" on Orlando Bloom regarding his upcoming film, "Haven":
Yo-ho! Orlando's Island-Bound Again! 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean' heartthrob ORLANDO BLOOM is making an all-new movie -- and ET's behind the scenes for the exclusive! "It's great to do a movie without a sword once in a while," Orlando tells ET. ET went all the way to the Cayman Islands to meet Orlando for the making of 'Haven.' In the movie, GABRIEL BYRNE and BILL PAXTON play a pair of shady businessmen who flee to the islands to avoid prosecution from the federal government. Their escape starts a chain of events that leads the British native Orlando to commit a crime that could ultimately change the country forever. "It's a pretty intense little film, both visually and emotionally, and I feel an audience will feel the impact of that," says Orlando, who also promises plenty of romance in the film. "I play a young character called Shy who is a happy-go-lucky young [British] man who's been brought up in the Cayman Islands. He's in love with this young Caymanian girl (ZOE SALDANA, who also appeared in 'Pirates'); he's kind of from the wrong side of the tracks and she's from the right side of the tracks [and] they get together to the fury and anger of their families." Ever since he exploded onto the scene, Orlando has been extremely busy in the production pipeline. He recently wrapped the epic 'Troy' with BRAD PITT, hitting theaters this summer, and is next set to star in 'Kingdom of Heaven' for Academy AwardŽ-winning director RIDLEY SCOTT. In addition to starring in 'Haven,' Orlando is also co-producing the picture. "It's the first time I've done that," he explains. "By getting involved in something you believe in you can help forward a film. In terms of the role that I've been playing as a producer, it's been really just a sounding board; it's very much a collaborative effort and we're all just mucking in and getting on with it." In fact, Orlando's been so busy working on 'Haven,' training for 'Kingdom' and promoting 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' that he's barely had any time to enjoy the incredible island location in which he's filming. "It hasn't been too much laying around on the beach, unfortunately," he says with a sigh.

Happy New Year! I saw on TV last night that "Entertainment Weekly" magazine has selected Johnny Depp as the third best entertainer of 2003. Well, we would've liked to have seen him as first, but third ain't bad. WE know he's the best pirate we've ever heard of!
In other news, "Entertainment Tonight" named Kiera Knightly as a "Star to Watch" in 2004. This is what they said: "It may be surprising to many, but KEIRA KNIGHTLEY's first American blockbuster was not this summer's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' with JOHNNY DEPP and ORLANDO BLOOM. But rather, it was 'Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace,' where she played Sabe, Queen Amidala's decoy. In 2003, between 'Menace' and 'Pirates,' the native Brit played a kick-a$$ soccer chick in the English-made 'Bend It Like Beckham' that made a huge splash in the U.S. The brunette-sometimes-blonde beauty also stars in 'Love, Actually' with HUGH GRANT. And with three films in 2004, viewers won't be able to escape the prolific Knightley. 'King Arthur' with CLIVE OWEN, 'Tulip Fever' with JUDE LAW and 'The Jacket' with Oscar winner ADRIEN BRODY all hit theaters next year. Oh -- and it's just been announced that 'Pirates of the Caribbean 2' is in the works!"
Here's an addition to today's news: Johnny Depp has been nominated (yet again!) as Best Actor for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in POTC by the Online Film Critics Society. The Online Film Critics Society is comprised of 1,323 critics and cinema journalists whose work is featured on many important Internet sites, including Salon, Slate, TV Guide Online, Film Threat, Netflix, IMDB and IndieWire. The awards will be announced January 5.
Billboard's Top Video Sales for the week ending December 27th lists POTC:TCOTBP at number 2. It was in first place the previous (release) week.
December 31, 2003
Happy New Year almost! This is an update on this past weekend's Box Office results. POTC plunged to 61, and edged the gross receipts to $305,388,685. It's only showing in 34 theaters though, so what can you expect? Next week it may disappear altogether. Sigh. It was good while it lasted...
December 29, 2003
I bought a fun pirate-themed game for Christmas and my family has enjoyed playing it. It really brings out the flavor of piracy! If you're interested, visit the website for "Pirate's Cove". Even if you're not particularly interested in the game, the site has cool pirate graphics and artwork!
Saw an article at Cinescape in which an anonymous tipster saw artwork for "POTC2: Treasures of the Lost Abyss", possible working title for the second POTC film. The tipster says that the Abyss is a reference to the first pirate ship that sailed in the Caribbean.
In other news, according to First Coast News, E! Entertainment Television has named Johnny Depp as its entertainer of the year. "I want my kids and my grandkids someday to be able to go, `Yeah, Pops, he really held it together and he did the right thing," Depp told E! "He didn't stray from the path, and he didn't sell out and go for the big dough early on or anything. I would be very, very proud if they felt that."

I've been out of town for a week, so here's the Box Office figures for the weekend of December 19-21. POTC fell down to 44th in 124 theaters, with a total gross of $305,343,252.

This isn't really news, but I found a funny music video put together about Jack Sparrow to the song "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred. It's hilarious! To see it, go to this site. Click on "He Really Is..."

Johnny Depp was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. That was the only POTC nomination I could find. The awards will be handed out January 25th and will air live on NBC. In addition, Johnny Depp was nominated as Best Actor for the Critics Choice Awards (Broadcast Film Critics Association), and POTC was nominated as Best Family Film (Live Action).
I checked the all-time Box Office earnings for POTC, and it has risen to 16th. It was at 18th in late September.
December 17, 2003
A big Box Office drop this week to 33rd. No hoozahs. But I assume most of us are enoying POTC on DVD by now. Earnings creeped to $305,267,970. Theaters showing POTC is now at 213. Revised figures from last week now show it was actually 26th.
December 9, 2003
The Weekend Box Office has dropped POTC down to 25th now. It's now in only 283 theaters and has a total earnings figure of $305,132,644. So a few can still see it in the theaters, though they're probably 2nd run and maybe not the best screens or sound. The DVD might be a better bet, it sure sounds good if you've got multiple speakers (it's that THX sound - thanks George Lucas!).
December 7, 2003
I found a site that lists all the Academy Award nominations that Disney is lobbying for POTC. They want a nomination for Best Picture, Best Actor (Johnny Depp), and Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush) to name but a few. Take a look!
December 2, 2003
I don't know about you - but I'll be spending my evening watching the DVD! Looking forward to the blooper reel! By the way, Circuit City is selling it for $15.99 - don't pay more if you don't have to!
December 1, 2003
Tomorrow is the big day! DVD/Video release! "E!" re-ran the Johnny Depp show tonight to catch a part of the buzz, and I've been seeing TV ads by Circuit City pushing the DVD.
The movie is now at 23rd in the Box Office Chart. It dropped to 342 theaters, and inched up to $304,879,615 earned. I hope the DVD sells well! It'll make a great Christmas present for someone you love!
November 24, 2003
I enjoyed the "E!" show, how about you? Not much new, but lots of good pictures of Johnny and a few snippets of interviews. Not much about POTC, but still enjoyable. Well, POTC has dropped in the Box Office. Hey, we knew it would happen again. It fell to 19th this week. The total earned is at $304,175,582, and it's only in 375 theaters this week. But hey, it's doing better than "Finding Nemo", which has plummeted to 38th. Of course, that's out in DVD now, but it seems POTC is still beating it in popularity, if not in dollars earned. The POTC DVD will be out in a week, so grab it in a theater while you still can!
November 22, 2003
The cable channel "E!" is airing a show about Johnny Depp on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 9:00 eastern time. I plan to watch it!
Order a POTC Tee-shirt from Disney!

November 18, 2003
Not again! POTC rose AGAIN from 18th last week to 16th this week in Box Office Receipts! It's in 425 theaters, which is less than last week! The total earnings is now $303,581,609, after 19 weeks out.
Also, I won an award for Best Name (2nd place) from "No Lies". Thanks!
November 10, 2003
Shiver me timbers! POTC actually came UP in the Weekend Box Office! It rose from 21st last weekend to 18th this weekend! It also increased from 331 theaters to 472 theaters! It's been out for 18 weeks now, and has grossed a total of $302,609,731. And I thought it would probably disappear this week! Do you think it'll still be in theaters when the DVD is released? Will they hold up the release of the DVD if it's still doing well in theaters? Arrr! Blimey!
November 7, 2003
The DVD is being released on December 2nd, 2003. Check out the DVD Menu Screencaps!

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the second film this year to gross $300 million in domestic box office, may earn a distinction that's even more uncommon: back-to-back sequels shot in one simultaneous production. Recent successes which have followed the same format are Warner Bros.' "Matrix" sequels and New Line's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Sources close to the film say the producers are pondering the possibility of back-to-back sequels, and talks have begun to secure the cast should Disney pursue that avenue. Returning for at least one sequel are producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott (who haven't completed the script), and talent Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. No start date has been set yet. (From an article in Variety magazine, 10-21-03 issue).

November 4, 2003
POTC:TCOTBP dropped to 21st in the Box Office. The total is at $301,823,371 and it is showing in 331 theaters.
October 28, 2003
POTC:TCOTBP is now standing at 17th for Box Office receipts. It's total is at $301,243,790, and showed at only 379 theaters this past weekend. This may be the last week in theaters, folks! It's disappeared from the 20-plex I was seeing it at. But, hey, only a little over a month before it comes out on DVD! Can you make it?
October 21, 2003
Hoozah! Hoozah! Hoozah! "Pirates" won Best Picture, Johnny Depp won Best Actor, and Geoffrey Rush won Best Supporting Actor at the Hollywood Movie Awards! These awards are chosen by the public, so it's a great support of our favorite movie! Orlando Bloom won the Hollywood Breakthrough Award, and also confirmed that he will be in the "Pirates" sequel, along with Johnny Depp. Can't wait!
October 20, 2003
This past week, Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" inched past $300 million, the year's second movie to cross that mark, after Disney-Pixar's "Finding Nemo." It was the first time one studio had two movies topping $300 million domestically in a single year.
POTC:TCOTBP slipped to 16th at the Weekend Box Office, and now has earned $300,557,571 total. It is now showing in only 493 theaters across the U.S. Your chance to see it at the theaters is quickly disappearing!
According to the "Yahoo! Movies" page, Johnny Depp is second and Orland Bloom is eighth in popularity on their searches. Go pirates!
The 7th Annual Hollywood Film Festival "Hollywood Movie of the Year Awards" has nominated "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" for Best Picture, Johnny Depp for Best Actor, and Geoffrey Rush for Best Supporting Actor. The awards will be held on Tuesday, October 21st. They aren't televised, but I will post any results in POTC's favor as soon as I find out!
October 13, 2003
POTC: TCOTBP has fallen two spots to 15th this weekend at the Box Office. It has earnings now of almost $299 and a half million. It is now showing at only 801 theaters. If you get a chance, go see it so we can boost it to over $300 million in earnings. (I saw it for the 7th time yesterday.) It doesn't look like it will surpass "Finding Nemo". No "hoozah."
October 8, 2003
This isn't new, but I have a very good review of POTC from TIME magazine this summer (July 14 issue). It's what made me go and see the movie on opening weekend.
October 7, 2003
"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" has dropped to 13th in the Weekend Box Office Earnings for the weekend of October 3-5. The total earned is creeping towards $300 million, and is now at $297,930,745. It has been showing for 13 weeks now and is currently in 1,211 theaters. Can it surpass "Finding Nemo"? Stay tuned!

Found on the site Teen Hollywood today:
Actor Johnny Depp has been pinpointed as the favorite to win the Best Actor Academy Award for his efforts in the hit movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." Depp put on an acclaimed comedic performance for his role as drunken pirate Jack Sparrow, and now critics have labelled him as the favorite for the coveted prize - with film studio Disney already preparing an Oscar campaign to support him. An executive says, "He created something dynamic and original, and every single review raved about him." If Depp does take home the prize in February, he'll prove to be an unusual choice, as the trophy traditionally goes to actors who play more serious roles.
On that same note: On the site Oscar Watch, the "contenders" list included these nominations for POTC:
Best Supporting Actor (Johnny Depp), Best Visual F/X, Best Makeup, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing. I'm not sure why Johnny Depp would be listed under "Supporting Actor", but maybe he might have a better chance of winning in that category. According to the article on Teen Hollywood, however, he's being campaigned for Best Actor. Anybody know for sure?
More good news for POTC: According to Variety, POTC joins the "Matrix" sequel at $300 million earned overseas. POTC has been at the top of the International Box Office for 7 consecutive weeks. However, according to estimates for the weekend of Oct. 3-5, it will drop out of the top 12 (U.S).

Just noticed today that POTC is the 18th top grossing film of all time. It can still move up, since it's still showing in theaters!
Sept. 22, 2003
POTC fell to #9 on the Weekend Box-Office chart today, with a weekend gross of just under $3.5 million. It's total gross receipts have now reached over $292 million, more than any other film in the top 100 other than "Finding Nemo", which has been in release for six more weeks than POTC. POTC, however, is still showing in over 1,700 theaters across the U.S. It sure has legs!

The September 22, 2203 issue of TIME Magazine reviewed Johnny Depp's new movie, "Once Upon A Time in Mexico". In the review, Richard Schickel called Johnny "a fabulously daring actor" whose performance "sets the tone" for the movie. I think fans of POTC would agree that these words apply to Depp's performance in that movie, also. For those who think otherwise, see my question on my Message Board.

Disney is already planning a sequel to Pirates Of The Caribbean. The film went straight to the top of the US box office with opening weekend takings of $46 million.   Eager to unearth more buried treasure now that "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" raised its flag high at the boxoffice this past weekend, the Walt Disney Co. is already talking of setting sail on a sequel to the theme park ride-inspired feature. In anticipation of the film's success, Disney had already made sequel arrangements with such key cast members as Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, as well as with the behind-the-scenes duo of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski. And the studio has also begun talks with "Pirates" scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio about drafting a sequel, though no specific story line has yet been set. Since its opening a week ago today, "Pirates" has earned more than $78 million, including a $46.6 million opening-weekend take easily won last weekend's boxoffice battle. (Josh Spector)
