Óðinn's Names and Titles

Siðhottr: one mask of many...

Óðinn is a God whose depth and complexity are reflected in the multitude of names, titles, and descriptive kennings for Him that have survived from ancient times. He is far from merely being a God of battle, though unfortunately there are some who call themselves Heathens who know him Him solely in this guise. However, it is clear that this is an extremely narrow view to hold of a God whose manifestations are so inclusive and varied, as is evidenced by Óðinn's multitude of surviving names and titles. The simplistic take on Óðinn began with the early Christians in Europe, who, determined to convert the indigenous Heathen peoples, played up Óðinn's most terrible aspects at the expense of His beneficent ones: for they demonised all the Old Gods in the name of their new religion. This is the main reason the formidable "God of Death and War"aspects of Óðinn were remembered while many of His benevolent masks passed out of folk-memory. An examination of Óðinn's Heiti (descriptive names) however, gives one an intriguing glimpse into the many forgotten aspects of a God who is as elusive, variable, and impossible to define as reality itself. I have gathered these names and translations of names from various sources. This is not a comprehensive or "official" list, but my personal one. However, most known heiti are included: over 235 names so far. Most of these names are Icelandic, but some are kennings in English, and some are various forms of German. Names with * before them are the most likely postulated form in Proto-Germanic, the theoretical source language of all the Germanic tongues.

Here are Óðinn's names organised by aspect.

Notes

1. Gautr = "(the) Goth", if you assume that *Gauta-z was named after the Gothic tribe. (There are some linguistic difficulties with this theory, however). Whether this derivation is true or not, the root originally means "sperm gushing" (according to Wolfram), or a male animal (a bull or horse). In the Edda-dictionary  by Neckel and Kuhn, one reads that Gautr (masc.) also means "the one who is chosen to be victim (sacrifice): "gautr (m.) der zum opfer bestimmte oder geweihte, in 'alda (aldinn) gautr', = Odin (der auch Gautr heißt - Balders draumar 2 u. 13; vgl. Hávamál 138)." I take this to mean that Odin is "the old (or the high, great) sacrifice" (aldinn = "old, high, great"). Aldinn is very often used to describe giants, gods, the sea, the world-tree, the odal. (Etymologically it is the Germ. "alt", Eng. "old").
(A tip of the helm to Answin for these notes on Gautr.)

1a. Greutungi = Ostrogoths, "the Shining Goths".

1b. From the account by Paulus Diaconus. Romans could not pronounce "W", so Paulus transcribed it as "G". He also writes that the barbarians (Langobards) say Uuotan. "W" was always written uu (double-u), but it is awkward to write three "U"s in a row. Therefore, the most likely modern transcription of this name is Wuodan.

2. Uncertain.

3. Fenrir, "the Fenris Wolf", who Óðinn will fight at Ragnarok.

4 Óðinn's brother. His name means "Will". Vili, with Óðinn and Vé, helped create the world, and the first humans. See Gylfaginning.

5. Possibly a reference to the color of a bear's fur: Wodan in bear form.

6. See "Odin Wins the Mead of Poetry" in Skaldskaparmál.

7. As a hanged man from a gallows-tree.

8. In the Icelandic idiom, hrammi means one who can seize and hold someone motionless with great strength, as an eagle seizes its prey. It is considered a compliment.

9. I was told by an Icelandic friend that jálk was an adjective used to describe a hale old man, or a virile older man who perhaps takes a young wife. It also is considered a compliment.

10. Or "Finder of Truth".

11. i.e., He causes others to tremble. Also found as a kenning for "sword" in Skaldskaparmál.

12. Óðinn's name at the Þing or Thing: the judicial assembly.
