Q: How do I become a Heathen?
A: That is between you and the Gods, land-spirits, and Alfar. You do not need to belong to a Kindred, Hearth, Asatru 'church', or what-have-you to be a Heathen, although most Heathens enjoy fellowship with others and the opportunity for learning and community organisations offer. However, it is not deemed necessary for there to be a 'mediator' between you and the Gods. You are the only person who can declare yourself Heathen, and you are the one who must develop a relationship to the Gods. Study the Source Texts, get out into Nature and connect with the web of life; meditate and ask the Gods, and you should get your answer. Some people like to wear a Heathen Symbol like a Thor's Hammer to publicly show their troth (trust) in the Old Gods.

Q: Where can I buy a Thor's Hammer or other Heathen jewellery or crafts?
A: There are many available online! Try my Crafts of Heathen Interest links.

Q: Where can I find a local Asatru/Heathen group?
A: Check my Asatru organisations links, a collection of reputable Heathen sites I consider to be the best on the Web. If you don't find one there, try the Irminsul Aettir's Asatru on the WWW listings. Surfer beware! A few sites that advertise themselves as Heathen are really just fronts for white supremacist or similar hate groups. If you carefully read what is on a Website, however, you can tell pretty easily what its orientation is.

Q: Is Woden's Harrow the Website of an Asatru/Heathen organisation?
A: No, it is a personal Heathen website, and not affiliated with any group, as I am not. There is not a group of people working on Woden's Harrow, just myself, so you can see I am busy in my free time maintaining a 700 + page site and answering the many E-mails I get.

Q: Can you help me find information?
A: Sometimes, if I have the time, and you have already tried to find it on your own, yes. But please know that just because this site is online does not mean I am a free homework-doer, or a full time information retrieval specialist. I'm not getting paid for this, folks. ;-)
First you should try the Woden's Harrow Site Search form (below, and also available on the Site Menu and Home pages) and a web search . Use words (subjects, names, titles) that would likely occur in the article you are looking for as search words. Also, you should try different spellings -- and use a dictionary if your spelling is not good. You won't find much if you spell the keyword incorrectly. You can also try the search word in Icelandic, German, or Swedish if you can't find it in English.
An excellent resource for Heathen information to which I refer people often is Our Troth, an enormous online Heathen book that contains scholarly research and lore about all the Old Gods and Heathen beliefs, past and present.
If you still have a question after you've checked to see if it is answered by something already on my site, or in Our Troth, E-mail me and I'll try to help you.

Q: Are there prints available of the original art images on the site?
A: No, thank you for asking, but not at this time. If any prints ever are available a notice to that effect will be placed on the site.

Q: Can I use some of your original art or text on my Website?
A: I usually say no; if my art or writing was on everyone else's site, why would anyone visit mine? However, occasionally I will make an original image for another site, or let someone use a different version of one of the images on WH. Those who ask politely are much more likely to get a free image made for them than those who are demanding or just steal one. If I find images of mine on your site and you have not gotten my permission to put them there, I will ask you to remove them.
See the site copyright statement.

Q: How can I enjoy surfing your site with all those annoying pop-up ads!?
A: Use the NEW earthlink site: http://home.earthlink.net/~wodensharrow/
it is ad-free! :-)
Or, for the Angelfire Woden's Harrow site: Minimise the first pop-up window (click the negative sign in the top right corner of the ad window, it makes it disappear and remain at the bottom of your browser as an icon). No other pop-ups will open if you have the first one minimised. Alternately, just click somewhere other than a link on the page you want to view, and the pop-up will go 'behind' it. As long as you leave the pop-up window active no other ads will pop! This works for other servers than Angelfire and Crosswinds, try it. ;-) See also Important Tips for Surfing WH.

Q: I can't sign up for free Heathen or Woden e-mail account. Can you help?
A: See Important Tips for Surfing WH for full instructions...especially if your ISP is AOL.

Q: Why have you not answered my e-mail immediately?
A: I simply do not have time to answer all my mail, nor do I consider it my obligation to respond to every E-mail I get--especially demanding ones. I give priority to personal E-mails rather than requests for information (many of which seem to be demands, lately) that could easily be found by using the Woden's Harrow Site Search, or one of the Web search engines found on the Search Page. (See above). I generally delete hate mail, so don't bother. I do my best to answer friendly greetings and personal E-mails, so don't be too discouraged from writing me, it's just that I can't do everyone's research for them. Although I am in general very glad to be able to point people towards knowledge, I can't learn it for you.

Q: Where can I find Asatru, Heathen, Germanic history, Folklore, or language books?
A: Try Blackwell's Academic Booksellers of Oxford, UK. Use the search feature on that page (just ignore the list of Tolkien books unless you like those too!) Search for keywords like 'Asatru', 'Heathen', 'Anglo-Saxon', 'Germanic', 'European History', 'Norse Paganism'', etc. If you know the title or ISBN number of the book you seek, you can type that in on the Blackwell's site. If you have no luck at Blackwell's, there are other online booksellers; just do a Web search using the keywords 'books', 'online booksellers', 'book sales', or such.

Q: Why do some pictures on your site fail to appear?
A: It is possible that is due to an error of mine, but most likely the server has just not loaded the image. To get it to show up, place your mouse cursor over the place where the image should appear (usually a blank space thinly outlined in white, with a small red X in a tiny white square at the top left corner), and click once on your right mouse button. You'll get a small menu; select "show picture". The image should then load (appear) -- if  it exists on the server and I've got my html code correct. If you still don't see the picture after trying "show picture", please E-mail me to inform me of the problem. If you could include the page URL where the picture didn't appear, it would be most helpful.

Q: What is a Harrow?
A: Harrow means altar. It is the Modern English form of the Anglo-Saxon hearg: "temple, altar, sanctuary, idol, grove", cognate to the Swedish harg, the German horg, and the Old Icelandic hargr, which refer to altars made of stacked stones and dedicated to a Deity. On these altars, which were usually under the sky, libations of mead (honey wine) or other spirits could be poured out, and various offerings burned or left for the God/dess. This website is a virtual Harrow dedicated to the God Woden (Wodhanaz, Wodan, Odin, Oden, Óðinn), and all the Germanic Gods and Goddesses, upon which you will find my offerings.

Q: Why does the site go off line sometimes?
A: Sometimes Woden's Harrow gets so much traffic it exceeds bandwidth limits. Please bookmark both the NEW SITE:
http://home.earthlink.net/~wodensharrow/
and the old mirror site:
http://angelfire.com/on/Wodensharrow/
Sometimes the mirror goes down for exceeding bandwidth too...let us hope both are not down at the same time. :-)
