A brief personal history of the founding of the organization:
Maxine Hjelte met with Helen I. Pontius and others
at a luncheon in 1935. Maxine and Helen worked for the Los Angeles City of Recreation and
Parks Department as recreation directors. Helen was so delighted to plan for a “sorority”
with Maxine and a few others, knowing ladies needed an organization like the men already had. Maxine said Helen was the true
founder and the others with her were her “planning committee”. The original
name was derived from three Greek letters XKP symbolizing;
CHARACTER, KNOWLEDGE and RECREATION.
