Thomas Mullins (1791-1861)

Thomas Mullins lived to be about 70 years old.  From detailed searching of his life, there is no record that he ever married, nor had children.  Thomas may have been what would have been called back then an "idiot", or certainly not a fully productive person.  He lived with his father his whole life, and was always enumerated with his father, also with varying ages, probably the result of his father's errors.

When Bud died he left his entire estate, except one horse, to Thomas, with the provision that when Thomas died, the remainder be divided among the other siblings of Thomas.  This by itself is an unusual departure from the standard of the day.  Bud died at the end of 1856, leaving Thomas two slaves, Sarah and Alfred, who were most likely there to take care of him.  Bud's will and and the eventual joint estate sale conducted after Thomas' death in 1861 can be found at Estate Sales of Bud and Thomas Mullins, 1861.

Thomas, as well as Bud, seem to have a terrible time with their ages. In the 1850 Federal Census for Cobb County, Bate's District, he and Bud are living alone together, Bud lists his age as 80 (he is really 92) and Thomas lists his age as 52 (he is really 59).

In 1830 the only Thomas Mullins enumerated in Georgia was in Talbot County. Also a John Mullins and a Lewis Mullis were there. In this listing Thomas is between 40-50, his oldest daughter 20-30, and a girl between 10-15, one boy and one girl 5-10 and 2 boys and 2 girls under 5. This cannot be our Thomas Mullins.

In 1860, Federal Census, Paulding County, pg. 142 (pg 849 of film), taken on July 21, 1860, line 24:

Tho's Mullins, age 69, Farmer, born SC, Real Value $250, Person Value $1,250, can Read & Write.

In 1860 Census there was a Slave Analysis of Paulding County. This was done by W.A. Foster, Jr. and resides in the Atlanta, Georgia Library. In it, Thomas Mullins has 2 slaves: one female age 65, and one male age 30, both living in one house.  Their names were Sarah and Alfred.

Per Forrest, a Thomas Mullins sold his property in Talbot County, Ga in 1837. He would have had 6 children between the ages of 7 and 17. This is another Thomas Mullins, not our Thomas.
