Brigance's Confederate military record states "Deserted to the enemy 09/10/1863, the same date he entered the Union Infantry as Lafayette M. Brigance. He was 33 and enrolled at Dardanell, Arkansas in the 2nd Arkansas Union Infantry, AR Co. D. 09/10/1863 for 3 years. He is described as blue eyes, red complexion and born in Carroll County, Tennessee. There is a note in Lafayette M.'s military record stating "Also M.L. Brigance & W.S. Brigance"
