1 Full Score and 1 Part. Contemporary Classical. 31 pages. 8 1/2 X 11 inches, Booklet. Published by IROM Music Publishing.

REMEMBRANCE for trumpet and piano was written in the Spring of 2000. It uses extended modal harmonies and a semi-chromatic melodic contour to reinforce the somber mood of the work. Extended instrumental techniques, such as playing into the piano and into the music stand, add variety to the instrumental sound and emphasize the concept of a life eternal. It is dedicated to the memory of my brother-in-law, Mark Hilyer.

Trombone

Duo

Dhamar

Price: $18.00
for two trombones (tenor and bass)

Duration: approx. 8 minutes

Composed in 1997, the melodic material in "Dhamar" was derived from the the Indian tala, dhamar, which emphasizes rhythmic accentutations in segments of 5-2-3-4. In this composition, the tala was not used for rhythmic proportions/durational purposes but as the determinate for pitch and register. Extreme ranges, microtuning, glissandi, and tonal/atonal contrasts are used to achieve a multi-cultural montage.

2nd Prize Winner - 1998 Southeastern Composers League Composition Competition.

for euphonium and piano

Duration: approx. 6 minutes

1 Full Score and 1 Part. Contemporary Classical. 9 pages. 8 1/2 X 11 inches, Spiral and Booklet. Published by IROM Music Publishing.

"Her he looked upon as one qualified, in all respects, to be the queen of his inclinations; and putting his invention again to the rack, for a name that should bear some affinity with her own, and at the same time become a princess or lady of quality, he determined to call her Dulcinea del Toboso, she being a native of that place, a name, in his opinion, musical, romantic and expressive..."
- Miguel Cervantes, Don Quixote, Part I, Chapter I.

A figment of the knight-errant's imagination, Don Quixote believes the simple peasant girl Lorenzo to be the Princess Dulcinea del Toboso. He never speaks to her and adores her from afar, yet he during his quest he constantly dedicates his chivalric duties in her name. Epitomizing the "perfect" woman, her imagined beauty and virtue excuses her lack of noble lineage and even more so her physical corporeality. Despite Don Quixote's comedic, yet tragic psychosis, it does not belie or negate his integrity or bravery; he continues to behave as a hero must in times of conflict and for his fair Duclinea.

In this single movement for euphonium and piano, Quixote's heroic nature and unrequited love are represented by the long lyrical melodies in the euphonium and the accompanying dissonant harmonies in the piano. Romanza de Dulcinea was written in the fall of 2004 and is the first movement of a sonata inspired by Cervantes' Don Quixote.

Romanza de Dulcinea was premiered by Martin Cochran at the International Euphonium Institute, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, on June 14, 2005.

for solo tuba

I. "Wourinen one, Tuba nothing"
II. Fleeting Images
III. With Motion

Duration: approx. 5 minutes

Three Diminutive Movements explores the abstract musical shapes created by opposing direction and similar interval content. All three movements use the same seven-note collection or septachord to derive their motivic ideas. In the first movement, the phrases were constructed in such a way so that they create a direct juxtaposition of opposing material in style, but not in pitch content. The second and third movements use this same idea, but in a more fluid and intuitive manner. All three movements emphasize the ideas of opposing movement and shape.
