Gray Whale (Eschrichtius
gibbosus). It’s not too uncommon for whales to come into
San Francisco Bay to feed. Some gulls follow whales to eat what comes out throughg their baleens. Seen here looking
down from the Dumbarton Bridge. Gray Whales are extinct in the Atlantic Ocean, threatened in the
western Pacific, and recovered from near-extinction in the eastern Pacific. Canon EOS 1V camera and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS L lens with 1.4x teleconverter. Provia 100F film, pushed two stops.
1/750 sec at f/8. This photo was published in California Coast and Ocean magazine, Autumn, 2002, and on the cover of a special section
of the Fort Bragg Advocate News / Mendocino Beacon, 2/27/03. A similar shot, taken less than 1 sec before,
was on the cover of Bay Nature, Jan.-Mar. 2003. "Whale Tail" (cover of California Coast and Ocean)
was taken 4 sec later. |
