Two Owls

Two Owls

Because of its habit of nesting in old growth forests, protecting Northern Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) required protecting the forests. It has thus become a symbol of the environmental movement on the California North Coast. It is also threatened by competition from the Barred Owl, which is beginning to move into the area. Federal Status: Threatened. Del Norte County, CA.

Canon EOS 1-V camera with Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L lens. Fuji Provia 100F film pushed one stop.  Canon 550 EX flash.  1/250 sec at f/2.8.

Red-eye and bright background removed in PhotoShop.

I thank biologist Chris Howard, then with Simpson Timber Company, for taking me out to see these special critters.  His job was to locate owl nests so he could tell the company where not to log.
