Two Owls

Because of its habit of nesting in old growth forests, protecting Northern Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) required protecting the forests. It has thus become a symbol of the environmental movement on the California North Coast. It is also threatened by competition from the Barred Owl, which is beginning to move into the area. Federal Status: Threatened. Del Norte County, CA.
