Northern Spotted Owl #1

Northern Spotted Owl #1

Because of its habit of nesting in old growth forests, protecting Northern Spotted Owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) required protecting the forests. It has thus become a symbol of the environmental movement on the California North Coast. It is also threatened by competition from the Barred Owl, which is beginning to move into the area. Federal Status: Threatened. Del Norte County, CA.

Canon EOS 1-V camera with Canon 600mm f/4 L IS lens & 1.4x teleconverter. Fuji Provia 100F film pushed two stops.  1/20 sec at f/5.6.  Gitzo tripod with Wimberly head.

I thank biologist Chris Howard, then with Simpson Timber Company, for taking me out to see this special critter.  His job was to locate the owl nests so he could tell the company where not to log.
