Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, CA. This is in the Klamath Basin, on the California-Oregon border. Eagles overwinter there by the hundreds.

Federal status: THREATENED. Following the ban of the pesticide DDT, which caused eggs to be very fragile, this magnificent symbol of our country has made a good comeback. Habitat disturbance is still a problem.
