Calf Breaching

Calf Breaching

Gray Whale (Eschrichtius gibbosus) calf.  It us usually the young grays that "breach" or jump most of the way out of the water.  In early May, 2011, there were 4-5 mothers with calves feeding outside the mouth of the Klamath River.  Compare his barnacle-free body to that of one that was seen upriver the following month ("Barnacle Billy").
