Native Plants - National Organizations

  • The Environmental Protection Agency's Green Landscaping site has information about reducing energy consumption through the use of native plant landscapes.
  • The Prairies Forever site has good material on the prairie ecosystem.
  • There's lots of info about milkweeds at the Monarch Watch site.
  • As you might expect, they have information on other butterfly host plants, too.
  • The Garden Web's Native Plants Forum offers questions, answers and discussions on many topics.
  • The Plant Conservation Alliance is a consortium of ten federal agencies and over 220 non-federal cooperators working to solve the problems of native plants extinction and native habitat restoration.
  • The Center for Plant Conservation. Rediscovering America's vanishing flora.
  • The parts of the Flora of North America that are completed are now on-line. Just type in a genus in the search at the bottom of each page.

  • The Soil Conservation Service's Midwestern Wetland Flora describes more than 300 species with photos.

  • The New England Wild Flower Society is one of the oldest organizations focusing on native plants.
  • Urban Forest information
  • The University of Wisconsin Herbarium features photos and descriptions of all plants native to that state.
  • Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources list of native plant sources.
  • Discover Life in America (DLIA) administers the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) for Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The ATBI is a project to inventory all species of plants, animals, etc. in the Park.

    Environmental Organizations

  • The Nature Conservancy operates a number of preserves, including the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Osage County, Oklahoma.
  • The Society for Ecological Restoration is an international professional membership organization for people researching, practicing or interested in ecological restoration. It has chapters across North America.
  • The Ecological Landscaping Association is a national membership organization for professionals and the public interested in ecological landscaping and horticultural practices.
  • The American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta lists its member organizations across the U. S., with links to their web sites.

  • The Evergreen Foundation sponsors school and community native plant projects across Canada.
  • The Federal Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center has information about plants and animals, with special attention to the Great Plains region.

  • This U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service site provides an excellent downloadable Schoolyard Habitat Project Guide. It is found in a section labeled "Educational Materials."
  • kidsgardening.com is National Gardening Association's site that offers support for educators and parents in this area.
  • birds.cornell.edu/schoolyard/all_about_birds has information for educators relative to Bird ID, Feeding Birds, Landscaping for Birds, and "Schoolyard Tips."
  • The Forest Where Ashley Lives is a new interactive CD-ROM now available from Iowa State University Extension. There are separate versions for students and teachers, and many urban forestry publications an activities. Click the link for a 1.5MB PDF file that is an online version of the book.
  • Raise Your Butterfly Online A fun and free educational experience.
  • Live Monarch Foundation – Butterfly Wish Fund If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first catch a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.
