Cape Cod Lighthouse

When Cape Cod Lighthouse was first built, its rounded style was just coming into use. Formerly, lighthouse towers had
been built with four, six, or eight sides but the rounded shape was found to better withstand the winds and waters from whichever
quadrant of the compass they came.
The original 30 foot Cape Cod tower was built in 1797. The present structure, which was built in 1857, rises 66 feet from
the ground. Standing atop a seaside cliff, the light's cap stands at 160 feet above sea level. The station was electrified
in 1933 and an automated light was installed in 1986. It was the last lighthouse on the Cape Cod peninsula to be automated.
In 1996 the lighthouse tower and keeper's house were moved 450 feet inland in order to escape the eroding cliff side.

Nauset Beach Lighthouse

The present Nauset Beach Lighthouse was built in 1877. It is made of cast iron with a brick lining and stands 48 feet
high. There were two earlier lighthouses at the site which consisted of three smaller lighthouses grouped together and known
as The Three Sisters Light. The first was swept into the sea, a victim of the continuing erosion of the Cape Cod shoreline.
The second was moved inland onto property owned by the National Park Service and is now preserved in an inoperative status.
To escape cliff erosion, the tower was moved in November, 1996 about 200 feet inland onto land owned by the National Park
Service, Cape Cod National Seashore. At the time of the move, only 36 feet remained between the base of the tower and the
edge of the cliff. The moving contractor needed 30 feet of clearance for maneuvering equipment so this move happened just
in time.
In this painting, the tower and keeper's house are depicted as they were in their original location, about a year before
the tower was moved.
