2002-2003 was Whitney High School’s
first year participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). We did so well, that our team brought home the Rookie All-Star Award! But more importantly, our students learned from actual engineers (Raytheon, Brenner-Fiedler Pneumatics, MAES, SBC, Isuzu, Integrated Aerospace, Shim-it and NASA/JPL). They formed alliances with other schools and learned teamwork. They were given the opportunity to learn Autodesk AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max software. They gave unselfishly of their time and
energy to work together to achieve what seemed to be the impossible. They
not only did it, but did it so well that it will be difficult for future teams to match their level of dedication and success. Congratulations, little Schmoes!
In the school year 2003-2004, we joined the
FIRST Lego League (FLL). Our "Schmall Schmoes" designed programmable robots from LEGO MindStorms Robotics and won awards for their original research and team spirit!
In January, 2004, our team entered
its second year in the FRC. We mentored Anaheim High School, and were so impressed with the "Aztec Warriors" that we continue to work with this dynamic group of kids. Our
FRC team won the Judges' Award at the Southern California Regional Robotics Competition! Wow!
Our second-year
FLL team won the Director's Award (the top award) at LEGOLAND, in the Southern California FLL Competition! Amazing!!! Thanks to all those dedicated people from LEGOLAND, from FIRST Robotics, the mentors and friends
from other schools, Mrs. Bruesch and our parents and friends, the Schmall Schmoes are on top of the world!
2005 Marked
the first year that both teams - FRC and FLL - were invited to the Nationals 4/21 - 4/23, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia! Congratulations to our students for a job well done!
In September, 2005, the FLL announced it's new game - Ocean Odyessey. Whitney will have two
FLL new teams this year. Good luck teams!
In early October, 2005, FIRST will announce the NEW VEX challenge for this year. Whitney is
looking forward to starting up our first VEX Robotics team this year!
January, 2006, will mark the beginning of the six-week robot build period for the 2006 WHS Robotics
FRC team. We need your help. In order to have an FRC
team this year, we must find another Whitney Teacher to act as a coach. If you are a student, parent, alumnus,
teacher, administrator, engineer, community member, or just want to make a significant difference in the lives of some very
special youngsters, please join us today!
