flickered once before dying out. She cursed in every language she knew, even making a few up. Closing her eyes and taking
a deep breath, she forced herself to relax.
The small trick worked and she stared at the matches in her hand. It shouldn’t
be this hard to light a candle.
Once more, she attempted to light the candle and smiled when it stayed lit. Slowly,
she walked to the small kitchen and placed it on top of the slice of cake.
“Happy birthday to me.”
out the candle, she let the tears fall. Another year had passed without word of her daughter. She refused to believe Sydney
was dead. No one was every really dead, they just disappeared. She had proven that before.
Pushing the cake aside,
she stood and walked outside for some fresh air. Leaning on the porch railing, she sighed as she took in the scenery. It was
a beautiful place, but it seemed wrong to enjoy anything while knowing her daughter was gone.
