BENEVENTUM — Special Rules & Order of Battle

Terrain Effects

Woods

Cavalry moving through woods pays 3" of movement per 1" of woods. Movement into or through woods disorders heavy and medium cavalry units. Light cavalry is not disordered.

Heavy and medium infantry units pay 2" of movement per 1" of woods. Moving into or through woods disorders them. Light infantry units pay no penalty for moving through woods and are not disordered.

Woods provide no "favorable ground" DRM for shock combat. They do provide a —1 DRM in missile combat.

Broken Ground

Moving into or through broken ground automatically disorders the following units: Heavy and medium cavalry, hoplite infantry, and phalanx infantry. Light cavalry, light infantry, and legionary infantry units are not disordered by broken ground.

Roman Camp

Cavalry may only move into or out of the Roman camp through a gate. (Cavalry may not attack or defend the line of the ditch/embankment.)

Heavy and medium infantry units pay 6" of movement to cross the ditch/embankment — and they are immediately disordered. Light infantry units pay 6" of movement to cross the ditch/embankment, but they are not disordered.

Units defending behind the ditch/embankment receive a +2 DRM in shock combat for favorable ground. They also receive a —2 DRM when fired at in missile combat.

Deploying out of the Roman Camp

When deploying through a gate, the Romans are restricted:

    • No more than two units (of any type) may deploy through a gate in a single turn. (Note: A single legion, or an alae sociorum, counts as two units — velites and heavy infantry.) Deploying through a gate costs 3" of movement.
    • Light infantry units may deploy through the gate in line. Heavy infantry and cavalry units must deploy through the gate in attack column.
    • For the first three turns, Roman units may only deploy through specific gates: I, III, and V Legions through the Porta Decumana, I and III Alae Sociorum through the Porta Prinicipalis Sinistra, V Alae Sociorum through the Porta Principalis Dextra, and the cavalry through the Porta Praetoria.
