Stephanie: you're 100% right. My kids pediatrician said the same thing, basically. He said to give them juice w/ vitamin C (orange) to help their body absorb the vitamins in oatmeal, cerials...great point!!
Jazzersize: Okay, my opinion on that is that excersize really is not primarilly for weight-loss. It is a way to help keep our body fit and healthy. I almost look at instructors in the opposite light. If I walk into a weight loss facility, I want to see people that haven't been thin their entire life. People that know what it's like to have a little pudge on them.
I'm a firm believer in the idea that thin does not equal healthy. There are tons of thin people out there that are way worse off than my fat ass, health-wise. Obviously being 400 pounds is not healthy, but a 170 pound lady can be just as healthy as any one else. Are blondes more healthy than brunettes? Silly question, but I think that the difference between 170 pounds and 112 is the same as hair color. Our bodies are all different. We are born to be a certain size, chunky or thin. There are extremes to both that are unhealthy, but the fat=out-of-shape myth has gone too far.
I hope she wins the case. Just because she does not physically fit up to their ideas of beauty (and that's what this all boils down to) doesn't mean she can't instruct an exercize class for crissake. You don't have to be a pschitzo to counsel pschitzo's, ya know?

I agree with the rest of y'all, and I hope the woman wins her case to be the fitness instructor. Being heavy doesn't necessarily mean you're out of shape. I'm pretty sure I can outlift either of my sisters, but you wouldn't know it to look at me.Sorry I've been gone awhile. I'm living in denial. Actually, I'm living with pms - which, now that I have a regular period, I now have regular pms. In my new, improved cycles, I become ravenous during pms. I'm not that hungry the rest of the time, so I kind of let myself go at these times. I know, bad. But, I finally did buy a scale. I've actually been losing weight during pms binge week, not a lot, but 2 pounds. I just went to the gyno on Monday and got the works done (pap, std checks, exam, polyp removed, and boocoo bloodwork), so we'll see what direction my "dieting" takes when I get the bloodwork back. Hope everyone's well!

Hmmmm....my first reaction to the Jazzercise story was "God, who wants to go to an exercise class taught by someone overweight?!"
But then I thought about myself. I'm overweight, but I believe I'm pretty fit. I can Tae Bo with the best of them and my flexibility is actually quite good. I've been doing yoga and Pilates. I was reading a web log a few weeks ago and the author was saying that she's working really hard to get her heels down to the floor in the downward facing dog position. Well, I can get my heels to the floor in downward dog and I've only been doing yoga for about a month.
So, I guess I'm fit, so why shouldn't someone like me teach a class, right?
Oh yeah...sorry I went AWOL. I'm doing well. Yoga, Pilates, and counting WW points. I kept yanking up my pants all day today so I must be losing some inches. This is Cadbury Creme Egg time and they are my FAVORITES. I bought 5 boxes of them a week ago, promising myself that I'd allow myself the 5 points every few days to have one. Well, I haven't even opened them yet. Can you believe that one?
I was skimming the posts below and I need to give a shout out about any of The Method videos. WONDERFUL. I live on The Method. Jennifer Kries is a goddess.

I really dont think it should either. I actually had a similar experience in a spinning class here in San Antonio and I think its really absurd to forbid someone the right to do a job that they are more than capable of just because they dont have the right 'look'. I hope she wins this case....

About that Jazzercise thing...I have a story. A few years back I took a spinning class at my gym. On the first day, the instructor came in, and she was noticeably overweight. More overweight than anyone else in the class. I admit that I thought What the hell does she have to teach me about fitness?
But then the class started, and she kicked all of our asses. She didn't even breathe heavy, and we were all moaning and sweating and taking breaks.
So...no, size shouldn't matter in teaching an aerobics class. In fact, if the teacher is large, it might help larger people feel more welcome in the class.
What do the rest of y'all think?
