U.S. FAMILY: SECOND GENERATION

2. James WILLOUGHBY    (Patrick1) was born[1] about 1855 in Ireland, probably County Clare. He died, probably in Tuscarawas County, Ohio after 1900. He was married[2] to 1: Bridget C.  COLLINS[3] by 1880[i]; and 2: Jennie[4] (Surname Unknown) about 1889.  James WILLOUGHBY is listed in 1880[5], as a railroad laborer in Brooke County, West Virginia but in 1900[6], (residing in Uhrichsville, Ohio), his occupation is listed as a saloonkeeper and working on his own account. One of his sons is also listed as a bartender and another son as a waiter for a restaurant and both were listed as working on their own account. It would be interesting to see if more information can be found about this family business.

[i] RESEARCH NOTES: A search for the marriage record for James and Bridget Willoughby should be requested from the Heritage House in County Clare. It is possible the record would be found. 1. Researching the first child of James & Bridget, John Willoughby, could possible provide additional information about his parents.

Bridget Delia COLLINS (CAMERON[1]?)

Information has been gathered about James’ wives. His first wife, as named in a child’s birth record, Bridget C. COLLINS[2] is born about 1855 in County Clare[3], Ireland. The name of her parents is unknown at this time. I believe she and James were already married when they came to America but this is not documented at this time. Her first known child, John (born about 1877) was born in Ohio but the family is found living in Brooke County, West Virginia[4] in the 1880 census.

Two little girls, Mary (born about 1879) and Annie (born in 1880) are listed in the family enumeration of 1880 along with John. There is a birth[5] record listed in Brooke County, West Virginia for “Hary Willoughby” born 1 May 1880. I propose that it is probable the child of this birth record is the baby Annie listed on the census as 3 months old. There is no listing of a Willoughby baby dying in the Brooke County, WV records. A son name Harry does not appear in James’ family in the 1900 census.

The name of the mother listed on this birth record is “Delia Willoughby”. The wife listed in the 1880 census is Bridget. I believe this is the same person and that her first name is Bridget with her middle name Delia being the name she was called.

The family moves to Ohio soon after the 1880 enumeration because there is a child, George, listed in the 1900 census as James’ son with a birth date April 1881. By 1883 the family is living in Tuscarawas and another child is born, James, and his birth record names his mother as Bridget C. Collins. Is the listed C. and initial for ‘Cameron’? This is possibly her mother’s maiden name or an error in the recording and stands for Bridget’s maiden name Collins. A last child was born in 1884, Charles, and his mother was listed as Delia Cameron. I am very thankful to have these records even though they tend to raise as many questions as they answer others. Bridget (Collins) Willoughby dies[6] 16 July 1884 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. There are no other records of children being born with James Willoughby the father.

James’ second wife:

Wife number 2, Jennie[7] (Maiden name unknown) was born[8] about Jan 1856 in Ohio. Who ever gave the information to the 1900 enumerator did not know very much about her parents nor if Jennie could read or write. A search for the marriage between James and Jennie in Tuscarawas County found a possible license[9]. But, the name on this license for the bride was, Jane Ross. While the license was applied there was never a return so it is possible the marriage did not happen and Jane was someone other than Jennie. Jennie is not a known nickname for Jane, as a rule.

The question from the 1900 census about Jennie is whether she was married before and is the mother of 3 children with 3 still living in 1900 as stated or is it possible that this information was written by the enumerator indicating that she was caring for the three children in the household at the time of the census. This was not the instruction[10] for these census questions but human nature is the same over all time eras and people usually don’t read instructions. More research should provide more answers.

James and Bridget Willoughby had the following known children:

7. i. John WILLOUGHBY was born[11] about June 1877 in Ohio, probably Tuscarawas County.

ii. Mary WILLOUGHBY was born[12] about 1879 in West Virginia, possibly in Brooke County. I have found a listing for ‘Minnie’ Willoughby in the 1900[13] census. Minnie is 21 years old and single. She is working as a servant in the George Fisher family. While I don’t have any proof, I think this Minnie was possibly Mary, daughter of James and Bridget.

8. iii. Annie WILLOUGHBY was born[14] 1[15] March[16] 1880 in West Virginia, possibly in Brooke County. There is an online-posted genealogy for Annie showing her descendants and parents. This is found at Roots Web in the World Connect section.

iv. George WILLOUGHBY was born[17] about April 1881 in Ohio, possibly in Tuscarawas County. Nothing more is known about George at this time.

v. James WILLOUGHBY was born[18] 28 July 1882 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

vi. Charles Albert[19] WILLOUGHBY was born[20] 13 January 1884 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

James and Jennie Willoughby had no known children although she may have been the mother of 3 children by a previous marriage or the 1900 census could have been referring to the fact that she was taking care of the 3 children living in the 1900 household, all of whom were older than the number of years she and James were married.

[14] Note by author: The birth record for a male child Hary being born to James & Delia on 1 May 1880 conflicts with the information found for the James and Bridget family in the census. The baby of that household was born in March and was a daughter named Annie. The information from other descendants of Annie confirms that of the census record. At this time it is unknown what their source is although I suspect family knowledge and a death record. On the birth record (figure 8) all the shown children are listed as males even Maggie and Ida which suggests inconsistency within the record. It is not probable that a mother had a baby girl in March and then a baby boy in May of the same year. Since the descendants would at least know that the sex of this ancestor was female, I believe that the child was a girl, named Annie, born on 1 March 1880 and that the birth record stating otherwise may have been incorrectly filled in by a midwife or Doctor who had forgot to make the record at the time of the event.

 3. Patrick WILLOUGHY (Patrick1) was born[1] about March 1862 in Ireland. In 1900[2] Patrick WILLOUGHBY (the son), his wife, Catherine “Kate” (COSGROVE), and 5 children were living in the Chippewa Township of Wayne County, Ohio. Patrick was working as a section foreman (Probably for a railroad although the census record did not state this.) Catherine “Kate” (COSGROVE WILLOUGHBY) appears to have continued to live in the same township through 1930[3] census although she has not been found in the 1920 census index. Neither Patrick (the son) nor Catherine’s (COSGROVE) death record has been found but further research may discover this information.  He probably died[4] 1905 in Uhrichsville, Ohio. Patrick married[5] Catherine COSGROVE on 15 Mar 1879 in Kilrush, Clare, Ireland. Catherine was born about December 1861 in Ireland and died[6] 6 November 1933 Lawrence, Stark County, Ohio.

Patrick and Catherine had the following known children:

9. i.  Michael WILLOUGHBY was born[7] 11 Sep 1880 in probably in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland where he was christened[8] 21 Sep 1880. He died[9] 3 Jul 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio.

ii.   Mary WILLOUGHBY was christened[10] on 16 Aug 1881 in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland. It is probable that she died since the next child was also named Mary.

iii. Mary WILLOUGHBY was christened[11] 15 March 1883 in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland and was listed as being born[12] March 1882 in the 1900 census.

iv Catherine WILLOUGHBY was born[13] Nov 1885 and was christened[14] on 1 Nov 1885 in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland, probably the same day she was born.

v. Patrick WILLOUGHBY was born[15] 27 Feb 1888 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. It is probable that he died[16] before 1900 as he is not listed with his parents in the census nor found elsewhere using the available index.

vi.   Julia WILLOUGHBY was born about[17] 11 Aug 1890 in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
