Past Tracker, Associates (Partner)

  • I have worked for 6-10 clients to find and document a tribal affiliation with the Cherokee Nation. These areas of research was primarily in Oklahoma, Texas and the Eastern Southern States.
  •  I have worked for 3-6 clients to find and document their tribal affiliation with the Pacific Northwest Tribes, mainly for Oregon and Washington.
  •  I have studied, because of famiLy connections, the records for the Yakima Nation of Washington and the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma.
  • I have worked for 3-6 clients for basic genealogica research and organization without any conncetions to native American heritage.
  •  I have accompanied a group to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City on a research trip and provided assistance on-site.
  • I have lectured at National and local seminars and conferences. Some of my lectures were basic research, organizing your records, specifice records (ex: census, military, etc.), as well as classes for finding your native American ancestor, Cherokee History, Cherokee research, and Dawes Rolls & more,(to name a few). Because of my personal family research I have lectured on research in Germany, France and Ireland.
FUTURE PROJECTS:

I plan to publish a family history within the next 2 years. This will include my husband’s lineage as well as mine. This publication is basically intended for family only.

I plan to submit some articles to the Southern Oregon Historical Society Newletter about people, places and historical events in the Sourthern Oregon area.

I plan to travel to a variety of repositories to continue the collection of my family’s ( and my husband’s) documents and for clients.

BIOGRAPHY & INTERESTS:

I am an Air Force Brat and spent the first 15 years of my life relocating every two-three years with my family. I attended many schools (including the American Jr. High School in Paris, France) before my father retired and then settled in the Medford, Oregon area. This is where I went to high school (Phoenix, OR) and met my husband. After his tour of duty in the Army, (where I joined him in Inchon, South Korea), we settled in the Medford area and began our family. His work took us to Coos Bay, Oregon where we have lived for the last 29 years. We were the parents of 7 children who are now grown and attending to their own families and careers. My husband has recently retired from WEYCO and we are now open to many opportunities for travel, study and research.

My hobby is traveling and if that is combined with research there is nothing I would rather do. Other interests are crocheting (from my Irish “genes”), reading and painting.

See our list of Lectures here, Presentations and Instructing.

RESUME - 2004 -

OBJECTIVE: Provide professional research assistance for people wishing to document their native American heritage.

EXPERIENCE:

1970-1975   Personal Family History Research

                                                        Medford, OR

Introduction and personal family history research:

  • I was introduced to family history research and began working with my family records and my husbands’ records.
  • I worked mainly with living family sources and began writing for vital records, etc.
  • I began working on my husband’s Native American heritage. The family knew who was the Indian but could not prove the tribal affilation. The family had been trying to find this connection since 1952.

1975–2004   Family History Center Librarian

                                                       Coos Bay, OR

Education and assisting others with their research:

  • I began working (volunteer) at the local FHC (then called a Branch Genealogical Library of the Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City).
  • I attended two BYU Genealogy Summer Seminars, took a correspondence class from BYU for family research and had excellent training with the Family History Center head librarian. The FHC have a monthly staff training session that helps all the librarians to learn basic resources to help all patrons. During my years working in the Center, I have worked with many patrons as well as being the technical services supervisor for over 15 years.
  • I continue to volunteer at the Family History Center in North Bend, Oregon and have assisted many while they researched their lineages both for native American heritages and not.
  • I have had several excellent genealogical researchers as my trainors, mentors, and peers: Merrill Mosher, CG; Lona Downing, CG; and Mary N. Bursik, AG. I have attended several National Conferences both NGS and FGS.
  • In 2002 I was able to document the tribal affiliation for my husband’s family. With this information I prepared the paper work and the family enrolled with the Shasta Nation of Northern California. This Nation is not a Federally Recognized Tribe.
  • Last year, 2003, I attended the NIGRR conference in Washington, DC for using the National Archives and its branches.
  • I teach local classes on the use of the genealogical program, PAF. I also volunteer at the high school and middle school level to teach the same program in conjuction with the history and English programs of the North Bend School District.

1992–2004   Certification & Professional Organizations      Coos Bay, OR

Certified American Indian Lineage Specialist (CAILS)

  • In 1995 I applied, was tested and passed to become a CAILS.
  • In 2000 I renewed my certification and passed.
  • In 2004 I renewed my certification and passed but the category had been changed by the Board to Certified Lineage Specialist/Native American Lineages, (CLS/NAL)
  • I am a member of APG and have served on the Board Member as well as serving as a booth chair for the NGS Conference in Portland for the APG.
