Here are just a few ways to get to Hopkins and Sittee. Contact us for more specifics or to make arrangements.

Driving

We are located in Stann Creek District, about half-way down the coast. You may look at a map and decide you'd like to drive. You can rent a car at the airport in Belize City, and depending on your expertise as a traveler, you can often get a pretty good rate using frequent flyer miles or by booking in advance through one of the major rental companies. It's my favorite way to see Belize---on your own schedule. From the Hopkins/Sittee area most attractions are a day-trip.

Leave the International airport and follow the signs to Belize City. You'll be on Central American Boulevard. Follow the signs to the Western Highway and turn right at the traffic circle. Keep in mind that to get to Hopkins you will want to follow signs to the south or toward Dangriga for most of the drive. There are no four-lane roads in Belize, so driving is not too intimidating. Once you are on the Western Highway driving away from Belize City there are 2 ways to go. If you have a 4X4 rental and want to brave the no-pavement way turn left at about mile 31 on the Western Highway.(skip to the **** if you want to stay on pavement) Follow the signs to Dangriga until you hit pavement again and turn left. You're now on the Hummingbird Highway. A few miles later you will see an intersection with another paved road.  Turn right onto the Southern Highway. About 14-16 miles late you will see an intersection with another paved road to Hopkins. Turn left and drive 4 miles to Hopkins.  This road literally will take you right into the ocean if you keep going straight. If you don't turn to go to Hopkins and stay on the southern Highway another 4-6 miles, you will see another intersection with a paved road to Sittee River. Turn left to go there

***The other way. Instead of turning off the Western Highway at mile 31, keep going to around mile 51 or so and follow the signs to Belmopan. Turn left onto the Hummingbird Highway. Follow the signs to Dangriga until you get to the 6 mile marker. This is called the 6 mile junction. Turn right onto the Southern Highway. About 14-16 miles latr you will see the left turn onto a paved road to Hopkins. If Hopkins is your destination, you're on your own from there. go get it. Lookins for Sittee River? Don't turn left at the Hopkins junction, but keep going another 4-6 miles if you want to go to Sittee River.

Too Much for you?

There are other ways.

Fly

Tropic Air and Maya/Island airways both fly from Belize City to Dangriga airstrip. From there many of the local hotels will arrange a pick up and drop off for a reasonable price, or you can hire a taxi. Gas is expensive in Belize (about $4.00 US per gallon in some places), so taxi fare from the Dangriga airstrip to Hopkins is going to be a little steep at about $80 to $100 Belize. That's about $50.00 US. Round trip air is about $100 US to Dangriga. Unfortunately, there is not yet an air strip in the Hopkins/Sittee area, though it has been rumored to be in the works for years.

The Bus

Don't take a bus from Belize City to Hopkins the day you arrive. You won't make the connections, and it is a miserabl trip if you've been travelling all day. Either spend the night in Belize city and start fresh the next day or rent a car or fly. Trust me. Bus serivce here is not what you are used to.

If you do take the bus from Belize city it is pretty cheap, about $25 Belize by the time you reach Hopkins. Bus schedules vary and you may wait a while, but the driver will tell you when to change buses (once in Belmopan and once in Dangriga). It can take up to 5 hours to get from Belize City to Hopkins or Sittee.

Buses go from Dangriga to Hopkins at about 12 noon and again at about 5 PM. You can catch them at the bus station or anywhere on the main road. Bus arrives in Hopkins at about 1 PM and 6 PM and continues on the Sittee River Village and to the Southern Highway and on to Placencia. It departs Placencia in the morning at about 5 or 5:30 Am to make the return trip arrivving in Hopkins at about 7. Take this bus if you want to go north from the village.
