This is a novel set during the first year of the Civil War. It is the story of a fictional battle in the far western theater of the war that could have happened.  All other places mentioned are real and the other Civil War battles and events mentioned actually happened. 
The story is told through the lives of the characters as they were shaped before the war and how they came because of the war to this battle. 
The characters did not exist but they are a reflection of the people who lived and had their lives changed by the war in that era.
