Hessmer High School
By Susan Ducote Jeansonne
When the Class of 1969 graduated, the campus contained a two story main building, a cafeteria, a home economics cottage with classrooms, a gymnasium, and an agriculture building. In the years to follow, portable buildings were added to accommodate the growing student population.
Eventually the home economics cottage was demolished, and a new wing was added to the school. It contained classrooms for the home economics program, two classrooms each for Grades K-4, the main office and secretarial office, additional restroom facilities, and a commons area. This new wing was connected to the old two story main building and to the cafeteria. A band room was also built behind the cafeteria.
These classmates were affiliated with the school after 1969: Teachers- Judy Bordelon, Susan Ducote, and Linda Rabalais. Teachers Aide-Mildred Ducote. Bus Driver-Lennie Daigrepont.
In 1988 Judge Nauman Scott, who knew nothing of Hessmer High, ordered the closing of the school through a desegregation order. Since 1988 children from the Hessmer School District have been bused to other schools in the parish. High school students attend Bunkie High, 7th and 8th graders attend Bunkie Middle School, and K-6 graders attend either Bunkie Elementary or Cottonport Elementary depending on their location in Hessmer.
Many Hessmerians opted to place their children in private schools instead. Most children not attending public school in grades Pre-K8th attend St. Marys Catholic School in Cottonport.
In 1997 Susan Ducote Jeansonne wrote and received a grant for $57,000 to renovate the gym and Ag building for a youth program. The Hessmer Youth Program is still operating today, and Hessmer Little League also uses the facilities. The cafeteria, band room, and new wing are leased by Louisiana Technical College for its nursing program. The two-story building is boarded up and will likely never be used again.
It was a sad day in the summer of 1988 when the community learned of the closing of its school. No one has ever truly gotten over the loss. Several attempts were made over the years to get the facility re-opened, but they failed.
Hessmer High, we salute you with cherished memories of the past.
