Families of the Children of Cornelius4 Washburn and Experience Richards

Only three of the children of Cornelius Washburn and Experience Richards of Bridgewater, MA, married and left heirs, only one of the three being a son, Daniel, who remained in Bridgewater. The children of Daniel will be carried forward into the 6th generation, but those of Cornelius’ daughters Experience and Joanna, who married respectively Jonathan Alden and Daniel Conant, will not be carried further than this file, because of two different reasons: the families of the descendants of Mayflower pilgrim John Alden have been studied and published by researchers far better than I already, and the family of Daniel and Joanna Conant has a great degree of uncertainty in it, beyond the scope of this work for me to undertake the proving of the families of their children to the degree that would leave me satisfied. That being said, if more probate information is found I will add to this file.

(550.) Daniel5 Washburn, second son of (148) Cornelius4 Washburn, (60) Jonathan3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, on 21 July 1730,[1] married Experience4 Harlow, daughter of William3 and Joanna (Jackson) Harlow (3rd), of Bridgewater,[2] on 4 June 1752 in Bridgewater.[3] She was born ca. 1732,[4] a granddaughter of William2 and Lydia3 (Cushman) Harlow (Jr.),[5] and of Eleazer and Hannah (Ransom) Jackson, both of Plymouth.[6]

Daniel Washburn was executor of his father’s will in 1779. He was living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census, next door to his son Ebenezer Washburn,[7] and in Bridgewater in the 1800 federal census.[8] On 3 June 1769 Daniel Washburn and his wife, Experience, of Bridgewater, along with other heirs of William Harlow, of Bridgewater, deceased, signed a quitclaim to their brother, William Harlow, of Middleborough, cordwainer, for their interest in a lot of land in Middleborough.[9]

Daniel Washburn died testate on 14 Feb. 1801 in Bridgewater, aged 70 years.[10] His will was dated 3 Dec. 1800, presented for probate on 12 Mar. 1801, and he named his wife, Experience, daughters Lois Washburn and Sally Washburn, daughters Zilpha Whitman, wife of Noah Whitman, Joanna Conant, wife of Phinehas Conant, and Eunice Bessee, wife of Jonah Bessee, sons Cornelius Washburn, son Ebenezer Washburn, grandson Daniel Washburn, son of Ebenezer Washburn, and he named Solomon Hayward, of Bridgewater, yeoman, as executor of his will, which was witnessed by Beza Hayward, Eleazer Alden, Jr., and Jacob Conant. The estate was finally settled in 1804.[11] (See Appendix Ω for a full transcription of his will.) Solomon Hayward was the husband of (1729) Zerviah6 (Washburn) Hayward, daughter of (535) Jonathan5 Washburn, who was Daniel’s first cousin. Experience (Harlow) Washburn died a widow on 27 May 1816 in Bridgewater, aged 83 years.[12]

Daniel Washburn and Experience Harlow had children:[13]

+      1767     i   Cornelius6 Washburn, born on 19 Mar. 1753 in Bridgewater,[14] married (1695) Lois5 Benson, daughter of (529) Lt. Jonathan4 and Martha (Snell) Benson,[15] in ca. 1775 in Bridgewater.[16] (To be continued in Washburn Generation 6.)

1768     ii   Daniel6 Washburn (Jr.), born on 15 Mar. 1755 in Bridgewater,[17] supposedly moved to Belchertown, Hampshire Co., MA, “and thence removed again,”[18] marriage not found. He was not named in his father’s will in Dec. 1800, and he was not found in the 1800 federal census in Hampshire Co., MA. A Daniel Washburn was living in Greenwich, Hampshire County in the 1810 federal census, but he appears to have been a younger man.[19]

+      1769   iii   Zilpha6 Washburn, born on 10 May 1757 in Bridgewater,[20] married Noah Whitman, son of Ebenezer and Rebecca (Paine) Whitman (Jr.), of South Bridgewater,[21] as his third wife, on 1 July 1779 in Bridgewater.[22] (To be continued in Washburn Generation 6.)

1771     v   Lois6 Washburn, born on 28 Jan. 1761 in Bridgewater,[26] never married, died on 25 Nov. 1847 in Bridgewater, aged 86 years, “apoplectic,”[27] but no probate records were filed for her estate in Plymouth County.

+      1772   vi   Ebenezer6 Washburn, born on 18 Aug. 1764 in Bridgewater,[28] married Abigail Weston, “2d,” of Middleborough, on 23 Dec. 1787 in Middleborough.[29] (To be continued in Washburn Generation 6.)

1774   viii   Sally6 Washburn, born on 16 Feb. 1768 in Bridgewater,[33] never married. She was probably the Sally Washburn living in Bridgewater, MA in the 1820,[34] and 1840 federal censuses,[35] but she was not listed as a head of household in Bridgewater in the 1810 or 1830 federal censuses. She died on 9 Dec. 1847 in Bridgewater, aged 79 years, of “consumption,”[36] but no probate records were filed for her estate in Plymouth County.

Experience (Washburn) Alden died on 26 Dec. 1775 in East Bridgewater, “in child bed,” aged 31 years,[44] and Jonathan Alden remarried to Hannah (Green) White, widow of Thomas White, of Abington,[45] and probably daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Jackson) Green, of Abington,[46] on 4 Dec. 1777 in East Bridgewater.[47] She was born on 27 Sept. 1747 in Abington.[48] They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census.[49] She died on 19 Feb. 1811 in East Bridgewater, of “pleurisy” or “consumption,” aged 63 years.[50]

Jonathan Alden died intestate on 18 Feb. 1825 in East Bridgewater, aged about 92 years, of a “great cold.”[51] Administration of his estate was granted to his son, Isaac Alden, on 24 Feb. 1825, and the distribution, dated 20 Feb. 1826, mention his heirs: Isaac Alden, Ezra Alden, John Alden, Cyrus Alden, Jonathan Alden, Mehitabel Jackson, and Mary Barrell. He may have been the Daniel Conant living in Buckland, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., MA, in the 1790 federal census,[312] or he may have been already living in New York. By 1800 he was in Herkimer, Herkimer Co., NY, where he was living next door to his son Archibald Conant,[313] and he was probably the Danl Conant living in Bloomfield, Ontario Co., NY, in the 1810 federal census,[314] next door to his son Jeremiah Conant.
