Families of the Children of Edward4 Washburn and Judith Rickard

 

 

         At this point there is only one child of Edward and Judith (Rickard) Washburn with known descendants, that of daughter Phebe Washburn. Edward’s sons John and Eleazer did not have any children, and Sarah, Noah and Isaac’s marriages and descendants are still unknown. Phebe is a triple Mayflower descendant, through Francis Cooke, James Chilton, and Francis Eaton. Her Stocking family was published in 1903 by Rev. Charles Henry Wright Stocking, and appears to be relatively sound, although there are still a few holes in the lives of her children Joseph, Grace, Lydia, Lucy and Eleazer, that warrant further research. This family will not be continued past this file.

Phebe5 Washburn, second daughter of (136) Edward4 Washburn, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born on 27 Mar. 1738,[1] baptized in Plympton, MA, on 14 May 1738,[2] married Benjamin5 Stocking, son of Samuel4 and Abiel/Abiah (Boardman) Stocking,[3] in ca. 1755.[4] He was born on 1 July 1732 in Middletown, CT,[5] a grandson of George3 and Elizabeth Stocking,[6] and a great-grandson of Deacon Samuel2 and Bethia (Hopkins) Stocking, of Middletown, CT.[7] On 14 Nov. 1756 Benjamin Stocking and his wife Phebe confessed to fornication before their marriage and were forgiven by the church in Portland, CT.[8] Their first child was born either before their marriage or shortly after. Phebe (Washburn) Stocking died on 23 Nov. 1784 in Portland, CT, aged 46 years,[9] and was buried next to her brother, John Washburn.[10]

         Benjamin Stocking remarried to Mary “Molly” (Andrews) Stocking, widow of Steven Stocking,[11] on 7 Jan. 1789 in Chatham.[12] They were living in Chatham, CT, in the 1790,[13] and 1800 federal censuses,[14] where he was a tanner and shoemaker,[15] and he died on 4 Dec. 1808 in Byron, Genesee Co., NY, aged 76 years,[16] but was buried in Portland, CT.[17] No probate records were found for him in Connecticut. Mary (Andrews) (Stocking) Stocking died on 9 May 1825.[18]

         Phebe Washburn and Benjamin Stocking had children:[19]

      1657       i   Phebe6 Stocking, born ca. 1755, baptized on 28 Oct. 1756, married (___) Bates in 1784,[20] and they may have settled in Byron, Ontario [now Genesee] Co., NY.

      1658       ii   Joseph Stocking, baptized on 28 Oct. 1756, marriage not found. He was not found in the 1790 federal census in Connecticut.

      1659     iii   Sarah6 Stocking, born on 26 Feb. 1758,[21] married Gideon5 Hulburt Jr., son of Gideon4 and Deborah (Brainard) Hurlburt/Hurlbut, of Middletown, CT,[22] on 30 Sept. 1777 in Chatham.[23] He was born on 20 Aug. 1755 in Haddam, CT,[24] a grandson of David3 and Mary (Savage) Hurlbut, and of Abijah and Esther (Smith) Brainerd, of Haddam.[25] They were living in Chatham, CT, in the 1790 federal census,[26] and apparently moved to Greene Co., NY, by 1793.[27] They were presumably living in Freehold, Greene Co., NY, in the 1800 federal census,[28] and in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1820,[29] and 1830 federal censuses,[30] where he was a farmer, but he was not a head of household in New York in the 1810 federal censuses. He died on 26 Dec. 1835 in Durham, Greene Co., NY, and she died on 23 Dec. 1841.[31] They had children, order uncertain:[32]

a. Annis Hurlburt, born ca. 1778 in Chatham.

b. Chauncey6 Hurlburt/Hulbert, born on 15 Aug. 1780 in Chatham,[33] married Betsy Norton, of Durham, Greene Co., NY.[34] He died on 2 Oct. 1840 in Broome, Schoharie Co., NY,[35] and she died in 1851.[36] He was living in Broome, Schoharie Co., NY, in the 1820,[37] and 1830 federal censuses,[38] where he was a farmer, but he was not found in Schoharie Co., NY, in the 1840 federal census.

c. Phebe Hurlburt, born say ca. 1782 in Chatham.

d. Lovina Hurlburt, baptized on 27 July 1783 in Chatham, died at age 18.[39]

e. Asaph6 Hurlburt/Hulbert, born on 21 Oct. 1785 in Chatham,[40] married 1.) Roxy Sage, and 2.) Deborah Disbrow.[41] He was living in Broome, Schoharie Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census,[42] and in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1830,[43] and 1840 federal censuses,[44] where he was a farmer.

f. Sarah6 “Sally” Hurlburt, born on 23 Aug. 1788 in Chatham,[45] married Peter Alberti/Alberty in ca. 1819. He was born on 13 July 1785 in Columbia, NY, and died on 2 Oct. 1860 in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY. She died on 23 Nov. 1866 in Prattsville, NY.[46] They were living in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census,[47] in Windham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[48] and in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY, in the 1840 federal census,[49] where he was a farmer, but he was not a head of household in Greene Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census.

g. Lyman6 Hurlburt/Hulbert, born on 15 Aug. 1793 in Durham, Greene Co., NY,[50] married Hannah Sutton, daughter of Giles Sutton, on 12 Feb. 1818.[51] He died on 24 Apr. 1870 in Downsville, Colchester twp, Delaware Co., NY, and she died in 1874 in Downsville, NY.[52] They were living in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[53] in Windham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[54] and in Prattsville, Greene Co., NY, in the 1840 federal censuses, where he was in manufacturing and trade.[55] They were living in Colchester, Delaware Co., NY, in the 1850,[56] and 1860 federal censuses,[57] where he was a farmer.

h. Benjamin6 Hurlburt, born ca. 1796 in Schoharie Co., NY, married Hannah S. Alberti/Alberty in 1819.[58] They were living in Durham, Greene Co., NY, in the 1820,[59] and 1830 federal censuses,[60] where he was a farmer.

      1660     iv   Moses6 Stocking, born on 12 June 1760,[61] married Elizabeth Pelton, daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Penfield) Pelton,[62] on 17 Nov. 1785 in Chatham, CT.[63] She was born on 13 June 1762 in Chatham.[64] On 31 Oct. 1785 and on 17 Sept. 1789 Benjamin Stocking, of Chatham, deeded land to his son, Moses Stocking.[65] They were living in Chatham, CT, in the 1790 federal census,[66] and they moved to Sheffield, Berkshire Co., MA, where he was living in the 1800,[67] 1810,[68] and 1820 federal censuses.[69] He served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Joseph Churchill’s 8th Company, and was in the New York Campaign in 1776, and at Peekskill in 1777.[70] They had children:

a. Alexander Stocking, born on 24 Oct. 1786 in Chatham, CT,[71] died young.[72]

b. Phebe7 Stocking, born on 16 Mar. 1788 in Chatham, CT,[73] married (___) Stillman, of Erie, PA.[74]

c. Another child, who died young.[75]

      1661      v   Lucy Stocking, baptized on 18 Aug. 1762, died young.[76]

      1662      vi   Grace6 Stocking, born on 8 May 1763,[77] probably married either Othniel Brainerd on 25 July 1782 in Chatham,[78] or Joseph Willcox on 1 Dec. 1785 in Chatham.[79] No children were recorded in Chatham to either Othniel and Grace Brainerd,[80] or to Joseph and Grace Willcox. Both Othniel Brainard and Joseph Willcox were living in Chatham, CT, in the 1790 federal census.[81] An Othniel Brainard was living in Chatham, CT, in the 1800 federal census,[82] but both Othniel and his wife were aged 45 or over in 1800, which means that they were an older couple. If this was the same Othniel Brainerd who married Grace Stocking in 1782, she was probably an older woman when they married, perhaps a widow, whereas Joseph Willcox was also living in Chatham, CT, in the 1800 federal census,[83] and the ages of the members of his household are more consistent with a younger couple marrying and having had at least 4 children by 1800, with one older woman also living in the household, perhaps Joseph’s mother.

      1663     vii   Lydia Stocking, baptized on 1 Oct. 1764,[84] marriage not found.

      1664    viii   Lucy Stocking, baptized on 2 June 1765 in Portland, CT,[85] marriage not found.

      1665      ix   Eleazer6 Stocking, baptized on 11 Dec. 1769 in Portland, CT,[86] married Dorothy Edwards on 12 Aug. 1790 in Cromwell, CT.[87] Children not found. He was not found in the 1790 or 1800 federal censuses in Connecticut, and he may have been the Eleazer Stockins who was living in Henderson, Jefferson Co., NY, in the 1810 federal census,[88] and in Williamson, Ontario Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census,[89] both being on the shores of Lake Ontario.

      1666     x   Reuben6 Stocking, baptized or born on 16 Feb. 1777 in Portland, CT,[90] married Elizabeth Rowley Isham, stepdaughter of Isaac Isham, of Colchester, CT,[91] on 17 May 1800.[92] She was born on 3 Jan. 1781.[93] He was living next door to his father in Chatham, CT, in the 1800 federal census.[94] On 10 Nov. 1802 Benjamin Stocking, of Chatham, deeded his homestead land to his son Reuben Stocking, in exchange for support for life.[95] They moved to New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY, in 1809, then to Monroe Co., NY, in 1819, and to Genesee Co., NY, in 1822.[96] Reuben Stocking was not a head of household in Chatham, CT, or in Genesee Co., NY, in the 1810 federal censuses, but he was probably living in Pittsford, Ontario Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[97] in Batavia, Genesee Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[98] and in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1840 federal census, where he was a farmer.[99] She died on 25 Sept. 1839 in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI,[100] and he died on 10 Aug. 1846 in Flowerfield, MI.[101] They had children:

a. Lucy7 Stocking, born on 11 June 1801 in Middletown, CT, married Henry Spalding.[102] She died on 2 Jan. 1877, and he died on 25 Feb. 1877.[103]

b. Phebe Stocking, born on 8 Jan. 1803 in Middletown, CT,[104] died on 5 Mar. 1810 in New Berlin, NY.[105]

c. Philo7 Washburn Stocking, born on 10 Nov. 1804 in Middletown or Chatham, CT,[106] married Nancy J. G. Reynolds, of Wheeling, WV,[107] on 13 Feb. 1834.[108] She was born on 22 Nov. 1815 in Shippensburg, PA.[109] He was in the jewelry business in Wheeling, and in the flour business in Sisterville, WV, then had the good fortune to become one who took part in the discovery of oil in West Virginia, which brought him significant riches.[110] He died on 28 Aug. 1882.[111]

d. Fanny7 Stuart Stocking, born on 3 Jan. 1807 in Middletown, CT,[112] married Anson Torpy,[113] and they lived in Elba, Genesee Co., NY.[114] She died on 8 July 1873, and he died on 2 Feb. 1890.[115]

e. Benjamin Trumbell Stocking, born on 11 Nov. 1808 in Middletown, CT, died on 10 Aug. 1822.[116]

f. Phebe7 Maria Stocking, born on 12 Feb. 1811 in Batavia, Genesee Co., NY, married Dr. S. P. Choate,[117] and they lived in Three Rivers, MI.[118] She died on 16 Nov. 1845, and he died on 20 May 1893.[119]

g. Moses7 Stocking, born on 7 Apr. 1813 in New Berlin, NY,[120] married Anna Loomis on 10 Sept. 1838.[121] She was born in 1818.[122] He was living in Bucks, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1840 federal census,[123] and in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer.[124] In 1853 he sold the farm in Flowerfield, MI, and moved west to Iowa, then to Cass Co., NE, then to Denver, CO, then back to Saunders Co., NE.[125] He died on 30 Sept. 1881 on his farm near Wahoo, Saunders Co., NE,[126] and she died on 13 Feb. 1893 or 1899 in Wahoo, Saunders Co., NE.[127]

h. John7 Isham Stocking, born on 27 May 1815 in Batavia, NY,[128] married 1.) Polly Wisner Clark on 15 Oct. 1845,[129] but she died on 15 Sept. 1851,[130] and he remarried to 2.) Mrs. Fanny (Loomis) Brown, of Alexander, NY, on 18 Sept. 1852.[131] They were living in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer.[132] She died on 24 Oct. 1887 in Flowerfield, Perkins Co., MI, and he died there on 2 Dec. 1889.[133]

i. Rev. Daniel7 Nash Stocking, born on 5 Mar. 1817 in NY,[134] married Eleanor A. Gill, daughter of William Gill, of St. Joseph Co., MI,[135] on 7 Mar. 1843.[136] She was born on 27 Apr. 1824.[137] He was living in Lee, Calhoun Co., MI, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a clergyman.[138] She died on 6 Sept. 1891 in Yankee Springs, MI,[139] and he died on 5 May 1905.[140]

j. Mary7 Stocking, born on 21 Jan. 1819 in NY,[141] married Edward Arnold Jr., son of Edward and Judith (Ellis) Arnold, on 4 Sept. 1842 in Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI.[142] He was born on 8 Mar. 1817 in Jefferson Co., NY, and died on 13 Nov. 1856 in Glenwood, Mills Co., IA, and she died on 28 Oct. 1856 in Glenwood, Millso Co., IA.[143]

k. Nancy Stocking, born on 2 June 1821 in NY, died young.[144]

l. Reuben Stocking, born on 3 Feb. 1823, died young.[145]

m. Nancy7 Ann Stocking, born on 7 Apr. 1825, married William Garrison.[146] She died on 10 Oct. 1896 in Castle Rock, CO.[147]
