Families of the Children of Hephzibah4 Washburn and Benjamin3 Leach Esq.

The families of the children of Hephzibah Washburn and Benjamin Leach remained in or near Bridgewater for the most part. Sarah Leach and her husband moved into Hampshire Co., MA, and Phebe Leach and her husband moved to Worcester Co., MA. The grandchildren of Hephzibah and Benjamin moved further out from Plymouth County, to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, and some of the families I have been unable to trace. Quite a number of descendants of Hephzibah and Benjamin Leach married other Washburn descendants, and in some cases their families will be listed under the Washburn spouse, but other than that the descendants of Hephzibah (Washburn) Leach will not be carried further than this file.

(452.) Anne4 Leach, eldest daughter of (129) Hephzibah4 Washburn, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts Colony, on 19 July 1703,[1] married Samuel3 Packard, son of Nathaniel2 and Lydia (Smith[?]) Packard, of Bridgewater,[2] on 3 July 1722 in Middleborough.[3] He was a grandson of Samuel1 and Elizabeth1 Packard.[4]

They lived in Bridgewater, and he was possibly the Lt. Samuel Packard who died intestate on 21 Sept. 1774 in Bridgewater.[5]

Samuel Packard and Anne Leach had children,[6] order uncertain:

1376     i   Anne4 Packard, born on 1 Aug. 1723 in Bridgewater,[7] married 1.) Dr. Elijah4 Edson, son of Capt. Josiah3 and Sarah3 (Packard) Edson, of South Bridgewater,[8] on 21 Apr. 1741 in Bridgewater.[9] He was born on 28 Oct. 1720 in Bridgewater,[10] a grandson of Joseph2 Edson, and of Zacheus2 and Sarah2 (Howard) Packard,[11] and he was a physician in Bridgewater. He died testate on 29 Nov. 1762 in Bridgewater.[12] His will was dated 17 Nov. 1762, and probated on 6 Dec. 1762, and he mentioned his wife Ann, his 4 daughters Ann, Olive, Susanna, and Ruth, his sons Elijah, Calvin, Daniel, Hosea, Caleb, Edward and Marshal, and he named Nathan Mitchel as executor of his estate.[13] (See Appendix Ę for a full transcription of his will.) In 1764 Calvin, Daniel, and Olive Edson chose guardians;[14] Hezekiah Hooper was appointed as guardian of Sylvester, Caleb, and Ruth Edson, children of Elijah Edson,[15] and Joseph Washburn, Jr., was appointed as guardian of Hosea and Susanna Edson, children of Elijah Edson.[16] Anne (Packard) Edson remarried to 2.) Capt. Jonathan Woods (Jr.), son of Jonathan and Betty Woods, as his second wife,[17] on 11 Feb. 1771 in Bridgewater.[18] He was born on 15 Aug. 1740 in Bridgewater,[19] and had married first to Keziah4 Keith, daughter of James3 and Lydia (Perkins) Keith.[20] No death or probate records were found for Capt. Jonathan Woods in Plymouth Co., MA, and he was not a head of household in Plymouth County in the 1790 federal census. Anne Packard had children by Dr. Elijah Edson, order uncertain:[21]

a. Anne5 Edson, born ca. 1741, the first daughter named in her father’s will, married (931) Eliab6 Washburn, son of (354) Capt. Joseph5 and Deliverance (Orcutt) Washburn,[22] in 1762.[23] He was born on 4 Apr. 1740 in Bridgewater,[24] a grandson of (110) Josiah4 and Mercy3 (Tilson) Washburn.[25] They moved to Hebron, ME,[26] then settled in Minot, Cumberland (now Androscoggin) Co., ME. Eliab Washburn served as a private in the Revolutionary War, and he was living in Poland, Cumberland Co., ME, in the 1800 federal census,[27] and in Minot, Cumberland Co., ME, in the 1810 federal census.[28] He died on 27 May 1818, presumably in Maine. (To be continued in Washburn Generation 6 under the children of Eliab Washburn.)

b. Elijah5 Edson (Jr.), born on 10 Feb. 1742 in Bridgewater,[29] the first son named in his father’s will, married (933) Martha6 Washburn, daughter of (354) Capt. Joseph5 and Deliverance (Orcutt) Washburn,[30] on 13 Mar. 1766 in Bridgewater.[31] She was born on 11 June 1744 in Bridgewater,[32] a granddaughter of (110) Josiah4 and Mercy3 (Tilson) Washburn,[33] and they moved first to Ashburnham, Worcester Co., MA, then settled in New Braintree, Worcester Co., MA. They were living in New Braintree, MA, in the 1790 federal census.[34] She died on 16 Mar. 1817 in New Braintree, aged 72 years,[35] and he died on 21 Jan. 1818 in New Braintree, aged 76 years.[36] (To be continued in Washburn Generation 6 under the children of Martha Washburn.)

c. Calvin5 Edson, born say ca. 1745, the second son named in his father’s will. He chose a guardian in 1764,[37] and he married Lydia Conant, daughter of Lot and Betty (Holmes) Conant (Jr.),[38] on 6 Feb. 1766 in Bridgewater,[39] and they moved to Oakham, MA. She was born on 2 Sept. 1746 in Bridgewater,[40] and died on 25 July 1778.[41] He was not a head of household in Massachusetts in the 1790 federal census, and no death record was found for Calvin Edson in Oakham. They probably had at least 2 children, order uncertain:[42]

1. Lydia6 Edson, born say ca. 1768, married Thomas Conant, son of John and Abihail (Pratt) Conant, of Bridgewater,[43] on 22 Apr. 1789 in Bridgewater,[44] and settled in Oakham, MA.[45] He was born on 10 Mar. 1766 in Bridgewater.[46] No death records were found for either of them in Oakham, MA.

3. (Possibly others)

d. Daniel5 Edson, the third son named in his father’s will, born say ca. 1748.[49] He chose a guardian in 1764,[50] and he probably moved to Brookfield, Worcester Co., MA, and married Betty Fuller on 10 Aug. 1773 in Brookfield,[51] and they probably moved to Woodstock, Windsor Co., VT, but he was probably the Daniel Edson living in Reading, Windsor Co., VT, in the 1791 federal census,[52] and in Springfield, Windsor Co., VT, in the 1800 federal census,[53] but he was not a head of household in Windsor Co., VT, in the 1810 or 1820 federal censuses, but he may have been living in Northfield, VT, with his son Freedom Edson in the 1820 and 1830 federal censuses. They supposedly had children:

1. Freedom6 Edson, a son, born on 16 Nov. 1779 in Woodstock, VT,[54] supposedly married Phebe Shipman, daughter of Elias and Sally (Doubleday) Shipman,[55] on 28 Apr. 1808 in VT.[56] He not a head of household in Vermont in the 1810 federal census, but he was apparently married and living in Northfield, VT, in the 1820 federal census,[57] and in Stowe, Washington Co., VT, in the 1830 federal census,[58] but he was not found in Vermont in the 1840 or 1850 federal censuses. His widow was probably the Phebe Edson still living in Stowe, Lamoille Co., VT, in the 1850 federal census, with Caleb and Betsy Goodenough.[59]

She had died by 1850, and he apparently remarried to a Salome (___), and they were still living with his son, Salmon Records Jr. in Turner, ME, in the 1850 federal census, where he was listed as a farmer. They had children:[71]

1. Seth Rickard, born on 4 Nov. 1788 in Bridgewater,[72] not found in the 1810, 1820, or 1830 federal censuses in Plymouth Co., MA, or Oxford Co., ME, but he was living in Turner, Oxford Co., ME, in the 1850 federal census, with a wife Tabatha, where he was a carpenter.[73]
