Families of the Children of Hannah4 Washburn and Ensign John2 Keith

The families of the children of Hannah Washburn and John Keith of Bridgewater, presented here, should be fairly complete, with a few exceptions. The families of the two daughters of Susanna Keith and Rev. Ebenezer Hines are incomplete, and some of the children of Zephaniah Keith and Mary Hooper, and of Capt. Joseph Keith and Chloe Packard are not fully traced. The family of the one daughter of Mary Keith and Solomon Pratt will be listed under her husband’s family in a later chapter, since he was also a Washburn descendant. Other than that, and a granddaughter of Daniel Keith who married Daniel7 Washburn, the descendants of Hannah (Washburn) Keith will not be carried forward further than this file.

(435.) John3 Keith (Jr.), eldest son of (127) Hannah4 Washburn, (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts Colony, on 1 Aug. 1712,[1] married Abigail Willis, daughter of Jonathan and Abigail (Stoughton) Willis,[2] on 8 Jan. 1734/5 in Bridgewater.[3] She was born on 3 Apr. 1716 in Bridgewater,[4] a granddaughter of Nathaniel and Lydia Willis,[5] and she died on 20 Jan. 1746 in Bridgewater.[6]

John Keith (Jr.) died intestate on 6 Sept. 1747 in Bridgewater,[7] and his father, John Keith (Sr.), of Bridgwater, yeoman, was granted administration of his estate on 5 Oct. 1747.[8]

John Keith (Jr.) and Abigail Willis had at least 4 children, order uncertain:[9]

1309     i   Lt. David4 Keith, born say ca. 1736 in Bridgewater. His grandfather, John Keith, Gentleman, was appointed as his guardian on 4 Apr. 1748,[10] and he named as executor of his grandfather’s will in 1761.[11] He was probably the David Keith who married 1.) Sarah Randall, of Easton, MA, daughter of Robert and Ann (Pratt) Randall,[12] on 25 June 1761 in Easton.[13] She was born supposedly on 22 Feb. 1737/8, and died before 1769.[14] He remarried to 2.) Sarah Copeland, daughter of Jonathan and Bettie (Snell) Copeland, of West Bridgewater,[15] on 16 Nov. 1769 in Bridgewater.[16] She was born on 13 Feb. 1744/5 in Bridgewater.[17] They lived in Easton, Bristol Co., MA. He served in the Revolutionary War, probably as a Sergeant in Capt. Macey Williams’ Company, in April 1775, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Capt. Josiah Keith’s 9th Company in the 4th Bristol County Regiment on 12 Mar. 1776, serving until at least 1780.[18] They were living in Easton, MA, in the 1790,[19] and the 1800 federal censuses,[20] but he was not a head of household in Easton in the 1810 federal census. He had one son by Sarah Randall, and 8 more children by Sarah Copeland:

a. John5 Keith, born on 23 May 1762 in Easton,[21] supposedly married Abigail House, probably daughter of Benjamin and Rachel (Ewell) House,[22] on 26 Feb. 1784 in Scituate, MA.[23] She was born on 30 Apr. 1765 in Scituate,[24] and probably died before 1840.[25] He supposedly served in the Revolutionary War, possibly the John Keith who served as a Private in Capt. Matthew Randall’s Company for 3 months in 1780,[26] and moved to Hope, Lincoln [now Knox] Co., ME, in ca. 1792, then to Westmoreland, NH, after 1810, then finally to Brookfield, Madison Co., NY, before 1820, where he filed a Revolutionary War Pension Application in 1832.[27] He was not a head of household in Maine in the 1790 federal census, but he may have been the John Keith living in Barretts Town Plantation, Lincoln Co., ME, in the 1800 federal census,[28] and was living in Hope, Lincoln Co., ME, in the 1810 federal census.[29] He was living in Brookfield, NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[30] and in the 1840 federal census.[31] He died in 1846 in Brookfield, NY.[32] They supposedly had children:[33]

4. Louvina6 Keith, born on 14 Nov. 1791 in MA, married Elijah Holmes,[41] of Hamilton, Madison Co., NY, son of Appleton and Lydia (Goodrich) Holmes, of Glastonbury, CT, as his second wife,[42] after 1830, but before 1840. He was living in Hamilton, Madison Co., NY, in the 1820,[43] 1830,[44] and 1840 federal censuses.[45] He died testate on 6 May 1849 in Hubbardsville, Madison Co., NY, naming his then wife Lavina, among others.[46] She was still living in Hamilton, NY, in the 1850 federal census.[47]

5. John6 Keith (Jr.), born on 17 Dec. 1793 in Hope, ME, married 1.) Sarah Mason[48] before 1825. She was born ca. 1794 in MA,[49] and died after 1850. He remarried to 2.) He was still living in Brookfield, NY, next door to his brother John Keith in the 1850,[61] and 1860 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[62]

11. Mary6 Ann Keith, born on 18 Feb. 1807 in Hope, ME, married Daniel Taft Dye, who was born on 21 Nov. 1807 in Brookfield, Madison Co., NY.[67] He does not appear to have been a head of household in Madison Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census, unless he was one of the two Daniel Deys living in Brookfield, but both of them appear to have been older men, as does the Daniel Dye living in Brookfield in the 1840 federal census.

3. (Another son), a twin, born on 18 Sept. 1806 in Mansfield,[96] died on 15 Oct. 1806 in Mansfield, aged 27 days.[97]

h. Calvin5 Keith, born on 25 June 1782 in Easton,[98] died on 11 Oct. 1805 in Easton, aged 23 years.[99]

i. Charles5 Keith, born on 23 May 1785 in Easton,[100] married Sibel/Sybil5 Keith, daughter of Asa4 and Susanna (Cary) Keith,[101] in ca. 1807,[102] and they moved to Western, [now Warren], Worcester Co., MA. She was born on 3 Feb. 1787 in Bridgewater,[103] a granddaughter of Abiah3 and Mary (Snell) Keith.[104] He was not a head of household in Bristol or Worcester Co., MA, in the 1810 or 1820 federal censuses, but he was living in Western, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1830 federal census,[105] where his aged mother-in-law was living with them,[106] and in Warren, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1840,[107] and 1850 federal censuses.[108] They had children:

His grandfather John Keith, Gentleman, was appointed as his guardian on 4 Apr. 1748,[123] and he was mentioned in his grandfather’s will in 1761.[124] He probably married Olive Edson on 12 Feb. 1767 in Bridgewater.[125] No death or probate records were found for either of them in Plymouth County, and he was not a head of household in Massachusetts in the 1790 federal census, but he may have been the Azel Keith living in Hartland, Windsor Co., VT, in the 1791 federal census,[126] and in the 1800 federal census.[127]

1311    iii   (Unnamed child), died on 20 Aug. 1742 in Bridgewater.[128]

(436.) James3 Keith, second son of (127) Hannah4 Washburn, (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts Colony, on 16 June 1716,[130] married 1.) Deborah Bennett, of Middleborough, on 25 Oct. 1737 in Middleborough.[131] She died by 1743, and he remarried to 2.) 2. Simeon Lewis Leonard, born on 12 Mar. 1819 in Middleborough,[167] was still single and living in Barnstable, MA, in the 1850 federal census, near his brother-in-law, Luther Hinckley, in the house of Mary Ames, where he was a blacksmith,[168] married Mercy Maria Parker, daughter of Capt. b. (Possibly others)

1315   iii   Keziah4 Keith, born on 9 Oct. 1748 in Bridgewater,[220] married Capt. Jonathan Woods (Jr.), son of Jonathan and Betty (Thomas) Woods,[221] on 3 May 1764 in Bridgewater or Middleborough.[222] He was born on 15 Aug. 1740 in Bridgewater.[223] They apparently moved to Worcester Co., MA. He was not a head of household in Plymouth Co., MA, in the 1790 federal census, and may have been the Jonathan Woods living in New Braintree, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1790 federal census.[224] She supposedly died in Saint Charles Co., MO., and he supposedly died before 1820 in Troy, MO.[225] They supposedly had at least one son:

Deacon Philip Hall, of Raynham, MA, as his second wife, on 27 Feb. 1760 in Raynham.[468] He was probably the son of Jonathan Hall, who died in Raynham in 1750,[469] and he had married first to Huldah Leonard on 3 Apr. 1740 in Raynham,[470] who died on 13 Oct. 1758 in Raynham.[471]

Deacon Philip Hall also died, on 2 Jan. 1764 in Raynham,[472] and Hannah (Keith) (Leach) Hall remarried again to 3.) (421) Capt. Israel5 Washburn (Jr.), Esq., of Raynham, her first cousin, son of (124) Israel4 and Waitstill (Sumner) Washburn, as his second wife,[473] on 14 June 1790 in Raynham.[474] He was born on 11 Aug. 1718 in Bridgewater,[475] a grandson also of (58) Samuel3 and Deborah2 (Packard) Washburn.[476]

Hannah (Keith) (Leach) (Hall) Washburn died on 4 Jan. 1796 in Raynham,[477] and Capt. Israel Washburn (Jr.) died on 21 Jan. 1796 in Raynham, aged 78 years.[478] (See page 263 for her children by Benjamin Leach Jr.)

Hannah Keith had 2 children by Deacon Philip Hall:

1321     i   Isaac Hall, born on 6 Dec. 1760 in Raynham,[479] married Mary “Polly” Leonard, of Raynham, daughter of Paul and Mary (Rider) Leonard,[480] on 3 May 1787 in Raynham.[481] They were living in Easton, MA, in the 1790 federal census,[482] but moved to Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH, by 1800. They were living in Westmoreland, NH, in the 1800 federal census.[483] Two Isaac Halls were living in Cheshire Co., NH, in the 1810 federal census; they may have been the one in Chesterfield, NH in that year,[484] and they were probably still living in Chesterfield in the 1820,[485] and 1830 federal censuses,[486] where he was a farmer. He supposedly died on 30 June 1836 in Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH,[487] and she was probably living with the family of their son, Elihu Hall, in the 1840 federal census in Chesterfield, NH. They supposedly had children:[488]

a. Alfreda Hall, born on 27 Sept. 1788 in Raynham, MA,[489] supposedly married Benjamin Snow, son of Seth and Anna (Farwell) Snow, who was born on 11 Jan. 1781 in Lunenberg, Worcester Co., MA, and died on 6 Oct. 1869.[490] Alfreda (Hall) Snow died on 2 Nov. 1821, and Benjamin Snow remarried to Anna Stearns on 7 Oct. 1839 in Arlington, MA.[491]

b. Philip Hall, born on 18 Jan. 1791 in MA,[492] was married and living next door to his father in Chesterfield, NH, in the 1820 federal census,[493] and in Keene, Cheshire Co., NH, in the 1830 federal census,[494] but he was not found in New Hampshire in the 1840 federal census, and he may have been the Dr. Phillip Hall living in Northfield, Franklin Co., MA, in the 1840,[495] and 1850 federal censuses,[496] a physician.

c. Elizabeth “Betsy” Hall, born on 21 Dec. 1792, died on 18 Mar. 1878 in Chesterfield, NH.[497]

d. Elihu Hall, born on 30 June 1795 in NH,[498] was married and living in Chesterfield, NH, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[499] and next door to his father in Chesterfield, NH, in the 1830 federal census,[500] in the 1840,[501] and 1850 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[502]

e. Polly Hall, born on 2 Oct. 1797 in NH.[503]

1322    ii   Hannah Hall, born on 21 Mar. 1763 in Raynham,[504] married David Dean, of Raynham, on 18 Oct. 1792 in Raynham.[505] They lived in Taunton, MA, and were living in Taunton in the 1820 federal census.[506] He was probably the David Dean who died on 11 Mar. 1830 in Taunton, aged 67 years.[507] She was probably living with the family of their son Philip S. Dean in Taunton in the 1840 federal census, but she was not found in the 1850 federal census in Taunton, and had probably died by 1850. They had children:

a. Hannah K. Dean, born on 19 May 1793 in Taunton,[508] married Abiezer Dean,[509] son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Hall) Dean, of Raynham,[510] as his second wife, after 1820. He was born on 20 July 1786 in Raynham,[511] and had married first to Mary Dean,[512] daughter of Joseph and Mary (Gilmore) Dean, of Raynham.[513] They were living in Taunton, MA, in the 1830 federal census.[514] He died on 22 Mar. 1835 in Taunton, aged 48 years, and was buried next to his first wife in the Plain Burying Ground in Taunton.[515] Hannah K. Dean was still living in Taunton, MA, in the 1840[516] and 1850 federal censuses,[517] and she died on 1 Oct. 1856, aged 63 years.[518]

b. Nahum Dean, born on 8 Oct. 1796 in Taunton,[519] married Mille Keith Robbins, of Bridgewater, daughter of Benjamin and Susanna5 (Keith) Robbins, on 12 Feb. 1824 in Middleborough.[520] She was born on 22 Sept. 1803 in Middleborough,[521] a granddaughter of (1324) Daniel4 and Millicent (Hooper) Keith (Jr.). He probably died in Feb. 1830 in Taunton,[522] and she may have remarried. She was not a head of household in Massachusetts in the 1840 federal census, and she was not found in Massachusetts in the 1850 federal census.

c. Roby Dean, born on 4 May 1801 in Taunton,[523] married David Arnold, of Norton, probably son of John Arnold, on 24 June 1825 in Taunton.[524] He was born ca. 1802 in MA.[525] He was not a head of household in Massachusetts in the 1830 or 1840 federal censuses, but they were living in Norton, MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer, and his presumed aged father was living with them.[526]

d. Philip Sidney Dean, born on 8 Nov. 1804 in Taunton,[527] married Mary Dyer Bates, of Raynham, on 12 Apr. 1832 in Raynham.[528] They were living in Taunton in the 1840 federal census, where he was a farmer.[529] He died on 30 Apr. 1845 in Taunton, aged 40 years,[530] and she was living in Taunton in the 1850 federal census.[531]

(440.) Daniel3 Keith, fourth son of (127) Hannah4 Washburn, (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts Colony, on 2 May 1725,[532] married 1.) Elisabeth Conant, daughter of Nathaniel and Elisabeth (Haines) Conant (Jr.),[533] on 14 June 1744 in Bridgewater.[534] She was born on 25 Dec. 1727 in Bridgewater,[535] a granddaughter of Nathaniel and Hannah (Mansfield) Conant.[536] She died on 24 Feb. 1756 in Bridgewater,[537] and he remarried to 2.) Lydia (Hayward) Keyzer, daughter of William and Lydia (Manley) Hayward, of Easton,[538] and widow of Seth Keyzer, of Easton,[539] on 21 Oct. 1756 in Easton.[540] She was born on 28 Mar. 1728/9 in Easton,[541] a granddaughter of Thomas Manley, of Easton.

Lydia (Hayward) (Keyzer) Keith died in 1762,[542] and Daniel Keith was living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census, next door to his sons Jeremiah and Salmon Keith,[543] and was still living in Bridgewater in the 1800 federal census.[544] He died on 28 Apr. 1803 in Bridgewater, aged 77 years,[545] but no probate records were found for him in Plymouth County.

Daniel Keith had 4 children by Elisabeth Conant, and 3 more children by Lydia (Hayward) Keyzer:

1323     i   Isaiah4 Keith, born on 22 Mar. 1745/6 in Bridgewater,[546] married Sarah Burr, daughter of John and Sarah (Turner) Burr (Jr.),[547] on 13 Oct. 1767 in Bridgewater,[548] and they lived in Middleborough. She was born on 28 Sept. 1746 in Bridgewater,[549] a granddaughter of John and Mary (Lazell) Burr, of Hingham, MA.[550] He died intestate on 26 Aug. 1775 in the Revolutionary War, where he served as a private from Middleborough in Capt. Amos Wade’s Company,[551] and his uncle, Capt. Joseph Keith “3d” was granted administration of his estate, which was insolvent. His inventory was appraised on 13 Nov. 1775 by Zadock Leonard, Abner Kingman, and Theophilus Crooker, and totaled only £40.12.1, which included a small house valued at only £6, but no land. Joseph Keith “the third” made oath to the inventory on 4 Dec. 1775, and petitioned the court that the estate is “Greatly Insolvent.” Debts owed amounted to £69.7.11, and collections received added another £50.8.6 to the value of his estate. His widow received a small portion, including half of the house and few personal items, the accounting included “Cash paid for Nursing the Widow,” and after probate costs were deducted there was only £54.5.1 to satisfy the claims of the creditors.[552] There is no mention of children in the probate proceedings, but two sons are identified in a Revolutionary War Pension Application filed by a grandson in 1849. Sarah (Burr) Keith possibly remarried to Francis Keen (Jr.), son of Francis and Margaret (Hunt) Keen, of Pembroke,[553] on 2 Oct. 1781 in Middleborough.[554] He was born on 20 June 1740 in Pembroke.[555] No death or probate records were found for Francis Keen in Plymouth County, and he was not a head of household in Massachusetts or Maine in the 1790 federal census, but an Eleazer and an Elisha Keen were residents of Greene, ME, in the 1790 and 1800 federal censuses.[556] She supposedly died on 7 Oct. 1836 in Greene, Kennebec Co., ME.[557] Isaiah Keith supposedly had 2 sons:[558]

a. Isaiah5 Keith (Jr.), born say ca. 1771 in MA, died before 1849, leaving descendants.[559] He was probably the Isaih Keith living in Livermore, Cumberland Co., ME, in the 1800 federal census,[560] but he was not found in Livermore, ME, in the 1810 federal census. He may have been the Isaiah Keith living in Knox, Hancock Co., ME, in the 1820 federal census,[561] and in Knox, Waldo Co., ME, in the 1830 federal census,[562] however an older Isaiah Keith was living in nearby Thorndike, Waldo Co., ME, in the 1830 and 1840 federal censuses, who may have been the father of the Isaiah Keith of Knox, ME.

b. Ebenezer5 Keith, born say ca. 1773 in MA, married Bethiah (___), and settled in ME. She was born ca. 1777 in ME.[563] He was living in Livermore, Oxford Co., ME, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[564] and in the 1830 federal census.[565] He died before 1849, and she was living with the family of her son Martin C. Keith in Livermore, ME, in the 1850 federal census. They had at least one son:

1. Martin6 C. Keith, born ca. 1807 in ME,[566] married Mary Ann (___). He applied for his grandfather’s Revolutionary War Pension on 2 May 1849 from Livermore, Oxford Co., ME,[567] and was living in Livermore, ME, in the 1850 federal census.[568]

He may have been the Benja Robens living in Bridgewater in the 1810 federal census,[583] and was probably the Benjamin Robbins living in Bridgewater in the 1830 federal census next door to Oliver Keith and Zephaniah Keith.[584] He died on 7 Apr. 1847 in Middleborough, aged 80 years,[585] and she died a widow of old age on 14 Aug. 1852 in Middleborough, aged 85 years.[586] They had children:
