Families of the Children of Hannah4 Washburn and Ensign John2 Keith

The families of the children of Hannah Washburn and John Keith of Bridgewater, presented here, should be fairly complete, with a few exceptions. The families of the two daughters of Susanna Keith and Rev. Ebenezer Hines are incomplete, and some of the children of Zephaniah Keith and Mary Hooper, and of Capt. Joseph Keith and Chloe Packard are not fully traced. The family of the one daughter of Mary Keith and Solomon Pratt will be listed under her husband’s family in a later chapter, since he was also a Washburn descendant. Other than that, and a granddaughter of Daniel Keith who married Daniel7 Washburn, the descendants of Hannah (Washburn) Keith will not be carried forward further than this file.

John Keith (Jr.) died intestate on 6 Sept. 1747 in Bridgewater,[7] and his father, John Keith (Sr.), of Bridgwater, yeoman, was granted administration of his estate on 5 Oct. 1747.[8]

John Keith (Jr.) and Abigail Willis had at least 4 children, order uncertain:[9]

1309     i   Lt. David4 Keith, born say ca. 1736 in Bridgewater. His grandfather, John Keith, Gentleman, was appointed as his guardian on 4 Apr. 1748,[10] and he named as executor of his grandfather’s will in 1761.[11] He was probably the David Keith who married 1.) Sarah Randall, of Easton, MA, daughter of Robert and Ann (Pratt) Randall,[12] on 25 June 1761 in Easton.[13] She was born supposedly on 22 Feb. 1737/8, and died before 1769.[14] He remarried to 2.) Sarah Copeland, daughter of Jonathan and Bettie (Snell) Copeland, of West Bridgewater,[15] on 16 Nov. 1769 in Bridgewater.[16] She was born on 13 Feb. 1744/5 in Bridgewater.[17] They lived in Easton, Bristol Co., MA. He served in the Revolutionary War, probably as a Sergeant in Capt. Macey Williams’ Company, in April 1775, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Capt. Josiah Keith’s 9th Company in the 4th Bristol County Regiment on 12 Mar. 1776, serving until at least 1780.[18] They were living in Easton, MA, in the 1790,[19] and the 1800 federal censuses,[20] but he was not a head of household in Easton in the 1810 federal census. He had one son by Sarah Randall, and 8 more children by Sarah Copeland:

a. John5 Keith, born on 23 May 1762 in Easton,[21] supposedly married Abigail House, probably daughter of Benjamin and Rachel (Ewell) House,[22] on 26 Feb. 1784 in Scituate, MA.[23] She was born on 30 Apr. 1765 in Scituate,[24] and probably died before 1840.[25] He supposedly served in the Revolutionary War, possibly the John Keith who served as a Private in Capt. Matthew Randall’s Company for 3 months in 1780,[26] and moved to Hope, Lincoln [now Knox] Co., ME, in ca. 1792, then to Westmoreland, NH, after 1810, then finally to Brookfield, Madison Co., NY, before 1820, where he filed a Revolutionary War Pension Application in 1832.[27] He was not a head of household in Maine in the 1790 federal census, but he may have been the John Keith living in Barretts Town Plantation, Lincoln Co., ME, in the 1800 federal census,[28] and was living in Hope, Lincoln Co., ME, in the 1810 federal census.[29] He was living in Brookfield, NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[30] and in the 1840 federal census.[31] He died in 1846 in Brookfield, NY.[32] They supposedly had children:[33]

1. Abner6 Keith, born on 4 Oct. 1785 in MA, married Ruth Garrett.[34] He was not a head of household in Madison Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, but he was living in Brookfield, Madison Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census,[35] and he supposedly died in 1836.[36]

2. Peleg Keith, born on 24 Nov. 1787 in MA.

4. Louvina6 Keith, born on 14 Nov. 1791 in MA, married Elijah Holmes,[41] of Hamilton, Madison Co., NY, son of Appleton and Lydia (Goodrich) Holmes, of Glastonbury, CT, as his second wife,[42] after 1830, but before 1840. He was living in Hamilton, Madison Co., NY, in the 1820,[43] 1830,[44] and 1840 federal censuses.[45] He died testate on 6 May 1849 in Hubbardsville, Madison Co., NY, naming his then wife Lavina, among others.[46] She was still living in Hamilton, NY, in the 1850 federal census.[47]

5. John6 Keith (Jr.), born on 17 Dec. 1793 in Hope, ME, married 1.) Sarah Mason[48] before 1825. She was born ca. 1794 in MA,[49] and died after 1850. He remarried to 2.) 6. David6 Keith, born on 31 Mar. 1795 in Hope, ME, supposedly died in 1881 in Hamilton, Madison Co., NY,[56] married 1.) Anna (___), who was born ca. 1807 in NY,[57] and apparently died by 1860. He remarried to 2.) Fanny (___), who was born ca. 1802 in NY.[58] He was living in Brookfield, Madison Co., NY, in the 1830,[59] and 1840 federal censuses,[60] next door to his brother John Keith Jr. Also living next door to John and David Keith in Brookfield in the 1830 federal census was an Orville Keith who may have been another brother or a cousin, and nearby in the 1840 federal census were a Charles and a Lewis Keith. He was still living in Brookfield, NY, next door to his brother John Keith in the 1850,[61] and 1860 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[62]

11. Mary6 Ann Keith, born on 18 Feb. 1807 in Hope, ME, married Daniel Taft Dye, who was born on 21 Nov. 1807 in Brookfield, Madison Co., NY.[67] He does not appear to have been a head of household in Madison Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census, unless he was one of the two Daniel Deys living in Brookfield, but both of them appear to have been older men, as does the Daniel Dye living in Brookfield in the 1840 federal census.
