Warzone FAQ
Welcome back to the FAQ. Our goals with the FAQ are as follows
Questions we can’t or won’t answer with the FAQ
While I can guarantee that every submitted question is read, we don’t always have time to monitor the forum. Target/Heartbreaker is a small company and FAQ coordinator is just one of the hats I wear. I was hired as a Sales Rep and Convention Support Guy, since then I have also been put in charge of the Freelancer program, helped with game design and playtesting and now I’m also working on the FAQ’s.
We do not intend the FAQ to prevent abuses of the rules possible while using the optional rules section. Warzone was designed to be a fast and furious squad based combat game. Individuals stacked high with HSA's and special equipment distorts the balance of the basic game but this FAQ is not the place to change that. Changes we will make include those that affect basic game balance. We want Warzone to be the best game possible. We’ll patch the holes in the game and you play the way you want to. The answers in this FAQ are official and should be used in Warzone tournaments unless a new compendium or other new publication supersedes them.
Please note we have a new submission form for you to get your questions to us. We have made it a bit more complicated on purpose. Too many questions for which the answers are listed in the rules are being sent in. Please take time to read the pertinent rules carefully before submitting a question. Wherever possible we have listed the page numbers pertinent to the questions being asked in the FAQ. Please don’t feel insulted if we don’t answer your question. Judgement calls need to be made on what questions to deal with and sometimes we’ll combine several questions into one. Also a question may be put aside for one of the reasons listed above.
Our goal is to publish the FAQ on a monthly basis. We will post updates in the forum or at the end of the current FAQ as needed throughout the month. The new FAQ will be posted during the 1st week of the month.
On a side note, Les wanted to mention that he and the crew of guys who work on the FAQ are all dedicated Warzone players and gamers in general. They understand that questions are something that everyone has about any game system from time to time. They understand the importance of keeping a FAQ current and up to date. With your help, the FAQ can be a source of useful information for everybody involved. We appreciate your patience while we prepared this new FAQ and hope it helps sort out many of the complaints about the old version.

WZ = Warzone

GENERAL
Additional Equipment: Q: Are you able to equip individual models with things other then what they are listed as having?
A: Sidearms and grenades can always be added to individual models. Note: if you add a sidearm or close combat weapon, that weapon becomes your secondary weapon. example: The Deathbringer has the Punisher combo, if want to add a chain ripper, you may, but it becomes his secondary weapon. WZ
Armories: Rules Change: The General Armory is considered to be part of all the Corporate Armories. This means that units who have the ability to purchase weapons from Corporate weapon lists can also purchase from the General Armory. This does not mean that units that can purchase from the General Armory can purchase from the Corporate Armories. General Equipment is also part of the general armory.
AI: Q: Do AI 's armed with flame-throwers still have to see if they Run Amok?
A: Yes, as stated in the new rules section you can fumble with a flame-thrower so it would be possible for an AI to Run Amok. WZ pg. 95
AI: Q: In a multiplayer battle does the owner of the force being attacked by an AI take control of it if it Runs Amok?
A: Yes. WZ pg. 95
Aiming: Q: If I spend 1 action aiming, do I get the +4/+4 bonus for the rest of the turn?
A: The +4 / +4 bonus is only good for that single model you are aiming at. If you Aim at model A then you fire and miss you may then fire again still with the +4 / +4 bonus. If you Aim at Model A then you fire and you hit and kill model A, then you decide to fire at model B you do not get an aim bonus. WZ pg. 52
Bipod/Tripod: Clarification: Either piece of equipment costs two points. The bipod takes one action to set up or tear down, and can be used for any LMG. The tripod takes two actions to set up or tear down and can be used for a HMG or any other heavy weapon. While the bipod/tripod is set up the weapon will count as braced without the need for the model to spend additional actions. The weapon is also counted as braced if the model fires the weapon using a wait action. CoW pg. 18
Brace: Q: When spending an action to Brace, do you need to re-brace to change targets during the same turn?
A: No. WZ pg. 52
Brace: Q: Can a Missile Weapon that needs to be braced choose to fire with a lower multiplier?
A: No. WZ pg. 48
Brace: Q: When firing off a wait with a heavy weapon, let's say a x3 hmg, which of these units will suffer the -4 MW penalty?
A: Only the trooper who with the 1 str, a model is no longer considered braced after it’s turn ends. WZ pg. 52
Campaign: Q: You say troops are allowed to gain EXP. Could you define "troop". Does that mean squads as well?
A: There are two "campaign systems" one in WZ the other in CoW. Only squad leaders and individuals gain experience in WZ, CoW allows for squad members to gain experience as well. As long as both players agree use whichever system you prefer. WZ pg. 142 CoW pg.88
Chronicles: Clarification: New rules, troops, equipment, etc., in Chronicles are not "official" unless they are released in a rulebook/compendium.
Close Combat: Q: Does a model need LOS to be able to charge or countercharge a visible (not hidden) model?
A: Yes. DoW pg. 9-11
Close Combat: Q: A model is facing away from an enemy model (out of his view arc), can the model turn and charge a model behind him as one action?
A: No. In order to charge or countercharge a model, you must have LOS to it. If a models back is to another model it would like to charge, it must first spend a move action in order to have LOS, thus making it an eligible target prior declaring a charge against. WZ pg. 55 + DoW pg. 10
Close Combat: Q: Can I charge on a wait action?
A: Yes, you may as long as the model is within your charge range. Once declaring the charge, check the range, if the model falls short it does not move and the wait counter is removed. DoW pg. 10
Close Combat: Q: Rules Change on initiating Close Combat with hidden troops: It is legal for models to move into hidden troops. The hidden troop will get a free CC attack as if it had charged with all appropriate bonuses. If the hidden model is also waiting it gets another attack with the wait action. This also counts as a charge from hidden status. If the other model survives the attacks and has actions left it may initiate CC. These attacks will not count as a charge. WZ pg. 55 + DoW pg. 10 FAQ team notes, this constitutes a minor change with regard to initiating CC with hidden troops. It is difficult to enforce the current rule disallow a player to "accidentally" come into combat with a hidden troop. For example, strictly enforced the rule would allow your opponent to "block" an area of the table with hidden troops you could not move into. We’ve made this change to ease competitive play and reduce the potential for arguments. We encourage you to continue to use the DoW rules for friendly play keeping in mind the spirit of the rule rather than the letter of the rule.
Close Combat: Clarification: When using any kind of teleportation (Art of Kinetics or any Dark Gift) except for the Deathbringer powers you need LOS. You may not teleport into CC with a hidden model. After teleporting next to it you would need to use another action to move into the hidden model and use the rules mentioned above. If you teleport into base to base contact with a visible model you have initiated close combat but it does not count as a charge. You would need to use another action to attack. WZ pg. 55 + DoW pg. 10
Coherency Clarification: Unless otherwise stated, leaderless squads have the same six inch coherency as units with a squad leader such as a sergeant. The current ruling is that the first activated individual becomes the temporary squad leader, for ease of game play you may wish to mark one of the figures in the squad who represents the temporary leader throughout the entire game. This model does not behave differently because it is the "acting" squad leader. It is simply a marker for squad coherency. If the marked model is killed it can be switched with the next closest model in the squad so that you always have a model on the board to measure squad coherency from. WZ pg. 40-41
Concentrate: Q: Exactly how many times can you concentrate in one turn?
A: You may only concentrate once, unless the spell actually states you can concentrate multiple times. WZ pg. 56

A: A unit must have LOS to the fear-causing model to be affected by the fear special ability. DoW pg. 5
Flame-Throwers: NEW RULE: When firing a flame-thrower, you must roll to make sure you don’t roll a 20. If so, you have fumbled.
Flying Models: Errata: When a model is flying, it can be seen by every model on the table, and it can see every model on the table that is not hidden. Terrain, no matter the height, is not considered to block LOS to or from a flying vehicle. BoW pg. 12
Flying Models: Q: Can a Flying model brace?
A: When a model is flying, it can not brace. However, a model that has the capability of flight may brace when it has landed. Remember that vehicle mounted weapons do not need to be braced, even while flying. BoW pg. 12
Flying Models: Q: It states that you can land a Flying vehicle at anytime just by saying so, does this mean it doesn't cost a action to land?
A: You may end a move action by stating that you have landed. BoW pg. 12
Flying Models: Q: How many inches of the ground does a model have to be so that it cannot be charged and reached by a model on the ground?
A: Any Model that is flying cannot be engaged in CC by a model that is not flying. BoW pg. 12

A: Light machine guns are also considered to be a heavy weapon so may take am LMG as the Heavy weapon for your squad. CoW pg. 85
Force Lists: Q: Are the weapon restrictions in CoW just for tournaments?
A: The weapon restrictions given in CoW balance Warzone for competitive play. It should be used for tournaments and leagues. For general Warzone play the rules do not need to be used if all the players agree. CoW pg. 89
Give Orders: Q: Does Giving orders end a models turn?
A: No. WZ pg. 57

A: Yes. But you must have a spotter as per the Indirect Fire rules. DoW pg. 8

A: No, a perfect success can 't be prevented in any way.
Personalities: CLARIFICATION: If two or more players want to take the same Personality as part of their force list for a battle each must write down a sealed bid. This bid represents the amount the player is willing to pay in addition to the normal cost of the Personality. Whichever player bids the highest amount can use the Personality as part of their force list for the battle. The player who bid highest pays his bid and the normal cost of the Personality from whatever points have been decided upon for force lists. A: No. WZ pg. 55
Secondary Attack: Clarification and New Rule: If a model is armed with an assault rifle and a pistol according to the CoW restrictions they may declare one of the weapons to be primary and take a secondary attack with the other. Although assault rifles are not heavy weapons, they are two-handed weapons and the model must be of sufficient ST to use the assault rifle one handed. As the assault rifle has an effective dam modifier of one the model would need to have a three ST to use an assault rifle one handed. WZ pg. 52 &55
Secondary Attack: Clarification: The book states that "Any figure which visibly carries two weapons gets one extra attack." This means that any model that has more then one weapon on its person, may designate one of them to be the primary weapon, and another to be a secondary weapon. The models equipment list must also allow them to carry multiple weapons. Creatures such as Soulslayers or Karnophages with "natural" weaponry are not assumed to be "carrying" weapons and therefore do not get a secondary attack with their claws, teeth, etc. Unless a specific attack is mentioned in the model’s rules they are assumed to be using their natural armament to its fullest potential.

A: 360 DoW pg. 9 Please note that this error has been corrected in later printings of DoW
Sweep Attack: Q: Can I parry a sweep attack?
A: Yes, every model under the Sweep Template may attempt to parry, a successful parry ends a sweep attack with that model. DoW pg. 9
Sweep Attacks: Q: If I equipped a model with a weapon capable of Sweep attacks, must I use this ability or can I choose to use a regular attack?
A: You may choose whether or not to use a sweep attack. DoW pg. 9
Sweep Attacks: Q: When you charge with a sweep attack weapon, do you have to get into base-to-base contact to perform the sweep? Or just get within the sweep templates range?
A: Sweep Attacks are a close combat attack and you must be in base to base contact with at least one model. Other models that are touched by the template do not have to be in base to base contact to be hit by the sweep attack. You would get your charge bonus on all models under the template. DoW pg. 9

A: Once you declare that you are spending an action to use it, you may then move it around the models arc of fire in any direction to see what you can hit. But you MUST use the action to fire the template weapon.
Use Special Power: Q: How many USP actions may I take in one turn? Is it one per turn or one per model?
A: All models are allowed to take one USP action a turn. WZ pg. 56
Use Special Power: Q: Can a waiting model use a special power action?
A: No, unless it states it in the spells description. WZ pg. 58
Vehicles: Q: When is a crash a collision and when is it a ramming?
A: When a vehicles movement cause it to impact with something there are two cases that cause it to be a ramming attack and not a collision. If a Heavy vehicle impacts a normal size or smaller model (not vehicle) it is a ram. If a Normal or Light vehicle impacts a small model (not vehicle) then it is a ram. In all other cases it is considered a collision.
As an addendum, when a ramming attack occurs the ramming vehicle that is involved does not suffer any damage. If a collision occurs both the vehicle and the impacted model take damage and get no armor rolls, the damage is automatic.
Vehicles: Q: If a Vehicle collides with something does it mean that the vehicle automatically stops right there?
A: If a vehicle collides with another vehicle they must both make a Loss of Control roll. If a vehicle collides with an impassable terrain feature they stop. If a Light vehicle collides with a Giant sized model it stops.
Vehicles: Q: In regards to rolling for "hit Locations" on vehicles: P 14 reads "first the attacker should make a Hit location roll." And P 16 reads "Each time your Vehicle... you make a hit location roll." My Question is who gets to make the roll?
A: The attacker
Vehicles: Q: Do you need to roll loss of control for parked vehicles? (i.e. have not moved for at least one turn)
A: No. BoW pg. 11
War Medics: Errata: War Medics may not be given Special Equipment of Heroic abilities. DoW pg. 36 Please note this errata has been corrected in later printings of DoW
War Medics: Q: Can Medics Give orders or Rally panicked Squads?
A: No. DoW pg. 36
Wait: Rules Change: Models using a wait action may not be interrupted by other waiting models. In the case of both players having multiple models on wait use the following sequence assuming it is player A’s turn
In the case of three or more players, each player except for the one whose turn it is would roll a d20 and the highest roll would take their model’s wait action first, then the next highest and so on. Only after all the other players had gone would the player whose turn it is get to use his models wait action.
Normal rules for use of wait actions apply, it must be a visible action and you cannot interrupt actions requiring a roll, although they may be reacted too. WZ pg. 58
Waiting: Q: Can I perform a Move action as a wait action?
A: You may Charge, Countercharge, and Dive for Cover. Those are the only move type actions you may make on a wait action. DoW pg. 5
Waiting: Q: If I have a Squad on wait orders and they get shot at, and one guy is killed, do I make a panic test before or after resolving any Wait Fire actions?
A: You may fire right after your model is killed and before you take a Panic test. WZ pg. 58
Weapon Restrictions: Q: It says in the rulebook that if a model has a ST of 2 or greater than the DAM modifier of the weapon then it can be used One-handed. Would that then allow you to carry a Heavy Weapon and a CC weapon?

A: No. to all Questions. DoW pg. 6
Weapons: Q: If you fire a weapon with a Dam Modifier that exceeds your ST, and the weapon has a laser sight on it, and you don 't brace, do you still get your bonus for the laser sight?
A: No, the laser sight only works when you are braced. WZ pg. 52
Weapons: Q: Is it possible to load the Headbutt Anti-tank weapon and then use a wait action to see if a target appears to be shot at?
A: Yes. you may load the Headbutt and go on wait, which may be used to fire the weapon at a later time. It might be good to make a "loaded" counter to represent this. BoW pg. 60
WYSIWYG: Clarification: It is Target Games/Heartbreaker Hobbies intention to model miniatures so that they are armed with the proper weapons and equipment. Due to rules changes, miscommunication and human error miniatures have been released that do not conform to the equipment lists in the rules. For non-competitive play, players are free to use whatever house rules on force list construction both players agree on. Target/Heartbreaker does not have a set of tournament rules or league rules requiring models be armed exactly as portrayed on the model. The General rules for tournament and league play require you use proper figure representation in a competitive setting. E.g. this means that an Initiate Heavy Weapon Trooper may be armed with any heavy weapon from the appropriate Corporate armory not just a Flame-thrower and it would be legal in a tournament setting. The CoW restrictions are designed to provide more balanced play and should be used when constructing your force lists for tournaments and leagues. Each player should have their force list available for inspection by their opponent if questions arise as to how a model is armed. Tournament and league organizers are free to change or modify the CoW restrictions however best suits the players they are catering to. Organizers should make the participants aware of any changes as far in advance of the event as possible. We would suggest not enforcing WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) during events using CoW restrictions.

A: Yes. BoW pg. 37
Meka: Clarification: Questions have arisen as too exactly how targeting priorities work for the Meka. It is as follows. If the Meka starts it’s activation in CC it continues with the CC until either the Meka or the other combatant is killed. If the Meka is not in CC at the start of its activation, determine the largest model (by size) in the Meka’s LOS. That model becomes the Meka’s target. If there is more than one model of the same size in LOS then the Meka may choose which will be it’s target. It will move toward or fire at that target with all of its available actions. Only if another model initiates CC with the Meka will it not attempt to engage it’s primary target. It may either fight back or attempt to make a beak away test to continue on to its primary target. This sequence is repeated every time the Meka is activated. This can cause the Meka to switch targets as new enemies are revealed. Please note that when referring to size of the model that we are referring to the size rules on pg. 4 of DoW. BoW pg. 37
