United States Navy The USS Gillette Homepage Portrait of the Gillette

Welcome to the
USS Gillette Christmas Party

Are you in this picture?

It is December, 1944, and the 'Fighting Blade' is steaming back from hard duty in the North Atlantic. Guns damaged, with one depth rack torn off by storms and running low on food (scuttlebutt has it only rice and prunes were left!), the Gillette fights the December seas to rejoin her convoy. Orders 'crackle through' and she heads to New York Yard for repairs. A crewman, gunner's mate Art Cook, has an idea:

"Let's chip in, invite all who can come, and celebrate Christmas!"

And so it was, dear visitor, so join the crew of the 681 and theirs at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City way back in 1944...
